Introduction

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan, which debuted in 2018, is well into its second generation. It’s the brand’s top-selling vehicle in the United States. VW officials decided it was time for a bit of a facelift for the exterior and a more substantial makeover for the interior. The updates to the outside give the new version a more refined look, including a new front bumper and a shift to LED headlights and taillights.

On the inside, the Tiguan gets a new look featuring standard digital gauges, including an 8-inch or 10-inch screen, depending on which trim level you choose. It has the newest version of the MIB3 infotainment system, a large infotainment touchscreen, and a 15-color ambient interior lighting system to let the driver set a mood while they are motoring. Despite the updates, the 3-row version of the Tiguan, a bit of an anomaly in the compact SUV segment, remains an option only if buyers skip all-wheel drive (AWD). If you want the control all-wheel drive affords, you’ll give up two passengers.

KBB Review Highlights

Driving the Tiguan is a pleasure. The always-enjoyable high seating position for the driver means it’s easy to see what’s going on around the SUV. With a slew of the latest driver safety technology, such as forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, plus blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic braking, this is clearly a fine vehicle for families.

Powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, one might not expect much in the way of performance, but at the low end of the range, it offers plenty of punch, ensuring getting around town is a breeze. However, after emptying the Tiguan of passengers, you’re unlikely to go hunting for a favorite curvy road, looking to put the SUV through its paces. With numb steering and unimpressive acceleration at the top end of the speedometer, the Tiguan very quickly reminds you that it’s a carrier, not a racer.

2022 Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen makes it easy to choose a powertrain for the 2022 Tiguan; it offers only one. The 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is tied to an 8-speed transmission, putting out 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. It comes with standard front-wheel drive (FWD), although all-wheel drive (AWD) can be found on some CPO models. Fuel economy was middle of the road for the segment, coming in at an EPA-reported 26 mpg combined at best.

The Tiguan comes in four trim levels for 2022: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and the SEL R-Line, which VW forms from the previous SEL and SEL Premium R-Line trims into one. The biggest change shows the inside of the Tiguan with the updated interior, particularly the shift to digital gauges. The quirky offering of a third row at the expense of all-wheel drive was a move that will frustrate some Tiguan fans all the way until 2025, when the third row gets dumped altogether.
