Mazda electric car range could boom with five new trademark filings

Mazda electric car range could boom with five new trademark filings

A flurry of activity at the trademark office sees Mazda Australia reserve naming rights for five potential new electric vehicles.

Mazda Australia has filed a range of new model names with the Australian trademark office, pointing to a possible electric overhaul for the local market.

The product trademarks point to an array of new vehicles for Mazda, using a familiar naming format with an ‘e’ suffix to denote an electric replacement of an existing petrol-powered vehicle.

The application with IP Australia includes the names Mazda 2e, Mazda 3e, Mazda 6e, Mazda CX-5e and Mazda CX-6e.

The Mazda 6e nameplate has already been revealed for the UK and Europe, used on a mid-size electric sedan sold as the EZ-6 in China, and built in a joint venture by Chinese automaker, Changan.

The Mazda 6e is set to go on sale in those markets in 2026, and while Mazda Australia has yet to confirm the model for Australia, the availability of a right-hand-drive model means it is under consideration by Mazda Australia.

Mazda has also shown a medium SUV, called the EZ-60 in China, that could undergo a similar name change for Western markets.

While the export potential for the EZ-60 is yet to be revealed, it could end up wearing either the CX-5e badges or, more likely, the CX-6e name, following the example set by the EZ-6 sedan.

Mazda’s new-generation CX-5 is set to launch later this year with mild-hybrid and full-hybrid models confirmed, and the possibility of a plug-in hybrid and full EV model arriving later, accounting for the CX-5e filing.

The other names trademarked by Mazda provide a glimpse of potential future product plans, with no reveal yet for Mazda 2 and Mazda 3-sized electric models, either in concept or production form.

In the case of the new e-suffix model names, Mazda applied for trademark protection in March 2025, with approval granted in early June.

While trademark filings are sometimes used to reserve a name, rather than outright confirmation of a new model, the alignment of the new names with Mazda’s current products points to a potential EV line-up that mimics the current internal combustion range.

While the Mazda EZ-6 and EZ-60 are based on the Deepal L07 and Deepal S07 respectively, the Deepal brand doesn’t yet have smaller models to underpin a future Mazda 2e and 3e.

Instead, Mazda may look to Deepal’s parent company, Changan, which has some more compact electric models in its range – though none that align with the size and positioning of Mazda’s current small car line-up.
