The Mazda CX-70 PHEV rounds out the CX-70 family of 2-row midsize SUVs that came out after the brand’s flagship model, the CX-90, which was introduced a year earlier. Like its 3-row sibling, it features Mazda’s hallmark of high-end style for a not-so-premium price.

The CX-70 PHEV is powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder paired with a 68-watt electric motor. This combination produces 323 horsepower and allows the SUV to travel 26 miles in electric-only mode. It also faces a tough group of competitors, including the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, among others.

Let’s check out what the Mazda CX-70 PHEV offers inside.

Passenger Room and Comfort

The CX-70 PHEV comfortably carries five adults. To ensure they’re relaxed and happy, a 3-zone climate control system ensures everyone is neither too warm nor too cool. Additionally, a pollen filter helps everyone deal with the yellow haze that causes runny noses and sneezing.

Front-seat passengers get plenty of headroom and legroom as well as heated power seats. Second-row passengers don’t make out too badly either, with an ample 39.4 inches of leg room. They can enjoy some privacy — or relief from the sun — with retractable window shades while relaxing in reclinable seats. Shifting from the Premium to Premium Plus trim level, buyers enjoy ventilated front seats and heated second-row seats clad in Nappa leather.

Features and Tech

Like its non-hybrid sibling, the CX-70 PHEV provides a slew of convenience technology, including a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen with Alexa Built-in, a wireless phone charger, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Music lovers can rejoice, as a 12-speaker Bose surround-sound system with Centerpoint and AudioPilot is standard in both trim levels. Two USB-C ports in the front and two more for the second row ensure that everyone’s smartphones or other devices run on a full charge.

The standard i-Activsense suite of safety features includes Smart Brake Support, Blind Spot Monitoring, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Driver Attention Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and a Rear View Monitor with static guidelines.

Materials and Design

The Premium package offers leather-trimmed seats along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, once you move to the Premium Plus Nappa leather becomes the seating material of choice.

In the front row, 8-way power adjustable seats become standard, although the driver gets a little better treatment with a power lumbar support as well as a 2-position memory function.

Cargo Room and Flexibility

The CX-70 PHEV features 39.6 cubic feet of space behind the second row. That’s enough room for several bags and a couple of suitcases. Once you fold the second row, it expands to a cavernous 75.3 cubic feet, plus with remote folding rear seats, it’s easy to do.

It also features smart uses of unfilled space for additional storage room, including a subtrunk that can hold items vehicle owners want to keep from prying eyes. Other small compartments keep items from moving about, and hooks for bags and other equipment are also included.
