What “The Jetsons” Got Right

What “The Jetsons” Got Right

What “The Jetsons” Got Right About Your Future

Did you ever watch reruns of “The Jetsons” and dream about the future? George Jetson’s life seemed amazing working just a few hours a week, flying to work in his personal spacecraft, and having robots handle all the boring stuff. While we might not have Rosie the Robot cleaning our homes just yet, it turns out the show from 1962 got a lot more right about 2025 than you might think.

But here’s what might surprise you: the most important prediction wasn’t about the technology. It was about people like you taking control of their careers and choosing work that fits their lives.

The Jetsons’ Amazing Track Record

When “The Jetsons” first aired in 1962, color TV was still new, and most people thought the show’s gadgets were pure fantasy. Fast forward to today, and it’s almost scary how accurate many of their predictions turned out to be.

1. Video Calling Everywhere

George Jetson regularly made video calls to his boss, Mr. Spacely, through wall-mounted screens. The show featured everything from home videophones to business video meetings. Today, platforms like Zoom, FaceTime, and Google Hangouts have made video calling so common that we barely think about it. During the pandemic, video meetings became as normal as phone calls used to be.

What “The Jetsons” Got Right

2. Smart Homes and Voice Control

The Jetson family controlled their entire home with the flip of a switch or a voice command. Jane could prepare dinner by pushing a few buttons on her Food-a-Rac-a-Cycle. Today, smart homes with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit let us control lights, temperature, security systems, and even order groceries—all with our voice.

3. Flat-Screen TVs and Tablets

While 1960s families watched tiny screens on bulky TV sets, the Jetsons enjoyed large, thin displays mounted on walls. George regularly read digital newspapers on tablet-like devices that look remarkably like today’s iPads. The first flat-screen TVs were developed in 1964, just after the show aired, but they didn’t become common until decades later.

4. Robotic Helpers

While we don’t have Rosie the Robot doing all our housework, we do have Roomba vacuum cleaners, smart dishwashers, and automated home systems. Companies like iRobot have brought Jane’s AutoVac to life, and robots are increasingly handling tasks from customer service to food delivery.

5. Wearable Technology

Elroy Jetson wore a smartwatch to school—and used it to watch cartoons during math class (some things never change!). Today’s Apple Watches, Samsung Galaxy Watches, and Fitbits do everything the Jetsons imagined and more, from making calls to monitoring our health.

What The Jetsons Got Wrong—And Why It Matters

But here’s where “The Jetsons” missed the mark, and it’s the most important part for anyone feeling stuck in their career today.

The show predicted that by 2062, technology would make work so easy that George only needed to work a few hours a day, a couple of days a week. The assumption was that automation would lead to more leisure time for everyone.

According to research from Swinburne University, this hasn’t happened. Instead, as economist Juliet Schor noted in “The Overworked American,” our economic system is geared toward increasing consumption and profits. The emphasis has been on making more money as the key to happiness, which means working even harder, not less.

McKinsey research shows that between 400 million and 800 million individuals could be displaced by automation and need to find new jobs by 2030. About 30 percent of the activities in 60 percent of all occupations could be automated. This means most workers—from welders to mortgage brokers to CEOs—will work alongside rapidly evolving machines.

But here’s the thing: this doesn’t have to be scary. It could be the best thing that ever happened to your career.

The Real Future of Work Isn’t What You Think

While everyone’s worried about robots taking jobs, something much more important is happening. People are realizing they don’t have to wait for some company to give them the perfect job. They can create it themselves.

The U.S. Department of Treasury reports that entrepreneurship continues to surge, with the United States averaging 430,000 new business applications per month in 2024—50 percent more than in 2019. More people are choosing to become their own boss rather than hoping technology will make their current job better.

Here are some eye-opening statistics:

  • 70% of entrepreneurs started their businesses because they wanted a career or lifestyle chang. (New Entrepreneur Statistics 2025-2030 (Worldwide))
  • 61% of self-employed people would feel satisfied with their accomplishments if their career ended today. (FreshBooks survey)
  • 73% of entrepreneurs describe themselves as “very happy” or “somewhat happy” with their decision. (Fit Small Business Survey)
  • Only 27% of traditional employees report high satisfaction with their work.  (Intuit QuickBooks “Entrepreneurship in 2024 Report)

The difference is clear: when you own your career, you control your destiny.

Why Automation Makes Business Ownership More Attractive, Not Scary

Here’s what most people don’t realize: the same technology that’s changing traditional jobs is making it easier than ever to start and run your own business.

Think about it:

  • You can start an online business with just a laptop and internet connection
  • AI tools can handle bookkeeping, marketing, and customer service
  • E-commerce platforms make selling products simple
  • Digital payment systems handle transactions automatically
  • Social media lets you reach customers for free

How a Career Ownership Coach® Makes Your Jetsons Future Real

This is where the rubber meets the road. Just like George Jetson had Mr. Spacely to guide his career (okay, maybe not the best example), you need someone who understands both where you are now and where you want to go.

A Career Ownership Coach® helps you navigate this transition by:

  • Clarifying Your Vision: Most people know they want something different but can’t put their finger on exactly what. A coach helps you identify your Income, Lifestyle, Wealth, and Equity goals. Do you want the freedom to work from anywhere? The ability to spend more time with family? The potential to build something you can pass on to your children.
  • Exploring Real Options: There are thousands of business opportunities out there, many in industries you’ve probably never considered. A Career Ownership Coach® introduces you to possibilities that match your skills, interests, and financial situation. They help you see options you didn’t know existed.
  • Providing Education, Not Pressure: The best coaches focus on education first. They help you understand different business models, what ownership really involves, and what it takes to succeed. This isn’t about selling you on any opportunity—it’s about helping you make informed decisions about your future.
  • Connecting You with Resources: Career Ownership Coaches® have networks of successful business owners and industry experts who can help you succeed. They can connect you with people who’ve made the transition you’re considering.
  • Supporting Your Journey: Changing careers is emotionally challenging, especially when you’re moving from the security of employment to the adventure of ownership. A good coach provides ongoing support, helping you work through concerns and stay focused on your goals.

The Technology Revolution Is Your Career Revolution

Here’s the bottom line: the same forces that are changing traditional employment are creating incredible opportunities for people who want to own their careers.

While Goldman Sachs reports that AI could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs, it’s also creating new possibilities for people who want to work differently. The key is positioning yourself as someone who works with technology rather than competing against it.

Business ownership lets you:

  • Choose technology that helps you rather than replaces you
  • Control how and when you work
  • Build wealth instead of just earning wages
  • Create something meaningful that outlasts any job

The Entrepreneur’s Source®, they have helped people like you since 1984 find their path toward the next chapter of their professional lives. These aren’t people who were born entrepreneurs—they’re people who decided they wanted more control over their careers and took steps to make it happen.

Your Jetsons Moment Is Now

George Jetson didn’t wait for someone else to create his ideal career. In the show’s world, he found work that gave him the lifestyle he wanted. You can do the same thing in the real world.

The technology exists. The opportunities are there. The support systems are in place. The only question is whether you’re ready to stop hoping your current situation will magically improve and start creating the career you want.

Remember, 70% of entrepreneurs started their businesses because they wanted a career or lifestyle change. They weren’t special or uniquely qualified—they were people like you who decided to take control of their professional future.

The Jetsons showed us a world where technology made life better and work more enjoyable. That world is here—but you might need to create it for yourself rather than wait for your employer to hand it to you.

Just like George Jetson chose a life that worked for him, you can choose to explore career ownership. The question isn’t whether you deserve better than your current situation—you do. The question is whether you’re ready to do something about it.

Your future doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s traditional career path. It can look like whatever you design it to be. And unlike the fictional future of “The Jetsons,” this opportunity is real, it’s available now, and it’s waiting for you to take the first step.

Ready to explore what your career 2.0 could look like? Connect with a Career Ownership Coach® today for a complimentary consultation. There’s no cost, no commitment, and no pressure—just an opportunity to discover what’s possible when you take control of your professional future.
