2026 XPeng G7 mid-size electric SUV detailed with AI-based self-driving tech

Chinese EV brand XPeng has revealed its newest medium SUV, with a strong focus on in-car and semi-autonomous technology.

The 2026 XPeng G7 medium SUV has made its formal debut in China, slotting in alongside the existing G6 range as a more tech-focused alternative.

The G7 SUV is packed with firsts for the brand, including an entirely visual-based driver assist system with end-to-end, semi-autonomous driving capabilities, and an augmented-reality head-up display.

It rides on a 2890mm wheelbase, identical to that of the smaller G6, however it measures in at 4892mm from bumper to bumper – making the G7 139mm longer than its smaller sibling, and closer to a large SUV such as a BMW iX EV or Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid.

The new model will be offered initially with single-motor rear-wheel drive from launch, with 218kW and a choice of 68.5kWh or 80.8kWh batteries, both featuring lithium iron phosphate chemistry.

Driving range for the G7 is rated at 577km for the smaller battery, and up to 702km for the larger pack, based on the lenient Chinese CLTC lab-test cycle.

The XPeng G7’s in-house developed ‘Turing AI’ chipsets allow the driver assist technology to encompass a number of Navigation Guided Pilot (or NGP) semi-autonomous driving modes, the company says, including city NGP and highway NGP.

Neither is a fully autonomous system, as the driver is still required to stay alert and take control if the vehicle requests intervention.

Rather than using radar or lidar sensing, the G7’s autonomous driving capabilities are entirely camera-based – as with Tesla vehicles – using an array of 11 cameras around the vehicle.

XPeng has also pumped up the capabilities of the augmented-reality head-up display, which has been developed in conjunction with tech giant Huawei.

It features an 87-inch display field, allowing augmented reality navigation, complex intersection guidance, and a range of stabilisation and correction features to counter vibrations and light interference.

The interior of the XPeng G7 is available with front seat heating, ventilation, and massage functions, nappa leather trim, real wood and metal inserts, dual 50-watt wireless chargers, 256-colour ambient lighting, and a 20-speaker sound system.

The head-up display takes the place of a traditional instrument cluster, but a 15.6-inch infotainment display and smaller 8.0-inch rear display screen handle the majority of occupant inputs.

External styling evolves the look of the G6 slightly, with XPeng’s new ‘XFace’ three-piece front light bar, a more upright rear pillar than the rolling roofline of the G6, and a full-width rear light bar.

Wheel choices are 18-inch as standard, with 20-inch wheels available on the top-spec model, while soft-close doors are available.

The XPeng G7 is slated to go on sale in China by the third quarter of 2025 (July to September) in China. There is no firm word on export plans, but it is a moderate chance to one day reach Australia.

Chinese media reports the G7 received 10,000 pre-orders within 46 minutes of being revealed.
