Human Resources Forum Offers ‘Power of Connection’

FORT WORTH, Texas — The Unified Group’s Human Resources Forum recently returned to Fort Worth, bringing together HVAC industry leaders and professionals to explore the emerging trends, best practices, and solutions shaping the future of human resources.

The Unified Group is a coalition of independent commercial HVAC contractors.

“Some experiences leave you speechless in the best way possible. I’m grateful for moments that remind me of the power of connection, shared journeys, and the lessons that shape us,” said Mendi Arnold, of Cullum Mechanical, in a press release from The Unified Group. “I’m humbled, re-energized, and deeply thankful for this experience.”

The forum began with a panel discussion on hiring processes and onboarding that covered standard procedures and interview practices. Pam Miske of EES Facility Services and Kristen Swanson and Melinda Friedlander of VHV Company then shared insights and experiences with coaching and leadership training for their employees.

To wrap up the first half of the day, a panel on internal human resources versus external third parties explored the pros, cons, and best practices for each approach.

“I get so much from the open discussions and appreciate that there are no boundaries with this group,” said Rita Swegheimer of Standard Plumbing & Heating.

Employment law attorney Spencer Mainka joined the group in the afternoon, leading an informal discussion on debunking common employment law myths and addressing recent federal-level changes that may impact businesses.

“Hearing from human resource professionals in the same industry who struggle with the same challenges makes you feel less alone,” said Madison Wright of Blauch Brothers. “It’s also valuable to learn about ways to improve and implement new ideas you’ve seen in action.”

During the second day, guest speaker Becca Auen, a licensed professional counselor and certified clinical anxiety treatment professional, explored the topics of managing stress in the workplace, navigating challenging yet productive conversations, preventing burnout, addressing the “man-up” stigma surrounding mental health, and fostering enthusiasm for a culture of growth.

Following Auen’s presentation, attendees broke into groups to explore the topic. Key takeaways included the idea that stress is not inherently negative; rather, the body is designed to respond to stress and anxiety in ways that help us stay safe and work through challenges. When approached with healthy strategies, stress and certain stressors can serve as valuable tools for growth, strengthening both individuals and teams.

The forum concluded with more attendee presentations. Sonja Antrillo of Legacy Mechanical and Rita Swegheimer of Standard Plumbing & Heating spoke about their termination processes. Madison Wright of Blauch Brothers showed the group the benefits of AcuMax, an assessment tool they use during the hiring process.

“The breakouts always bring value. Top-level leaders discussing how to lead our teams to success, happiness, and fulfillment lifts the spirit in us all,” said Frank Quintanar of J&J Air Conditioning.
