2018 XC90 with the sunroof leak issue | SwedeSpeed

Adding yet another XC90 to the list of vehicles this issue has impacted. 2018 XC90 that I bought as a CPO in 2021. In July of 2023, I noticed a pool of water on the rear cargo mat and took my vehicle in to have the leak fixed. At that time they told me it was the rear driver’s side drain hose and they replaced that under warranty. They claimed they fixed it and tested it with a hose, but I now have my doubts it was actually fixed then. I told them to test the battery and everything else given the water pouring onto it and everything else from that rear pillar. When I went in to pick it up the maintenance form hadn’t been fully completed and stopped at the check for my brakes (which is what they charged me for because my “rear pads were low”). When I questioned the advisor on this he said “oh, that tech is new and he must have forgotten to mark things off.” I explained how horrible of a look this was as a customer (especially blaming it on the new guy), got a copy of the incomplete maintenance checklist, and made them immediately go test the battery for me before leaving the dealer with my “fixed” car.

In April of this year (2024), the day before I left on a trip, I again noticed a pool of water in the back of my car after I had parked outside of a friend’s house for dinner while it was raining. I returned and got it into the dealer as soon as I could a few weeks ago. My passenger seat motor to move it was not working and needed to be replaced as well but they stated that had nothing to do with the water leak. Initially after I dropped my car off they told me they had been blasting the car with water with a power washer and could not replicate the leak. I called BS – I had poured my two liter bottle of water on the roof while standing by the driver’s door just before taking it in and that water leaked right into the cargo area. I told them to try again and maybe just use a hose or I could come in and do it for them. Suddenly they found the leak and this time the front driver’s side hose was clogged. They attempted to charge me the $400 or so to fix that which I refused and said they needed to figure that out on their end because it was ridiculous that it had been less than a year since they last fixed the problem.

8 days after I dropped my car off (Tuesday) I called to see if they were done with my car; apparently the motor they had to order came in on Monday and they called the wrong number to inform me work was complete. When I asked what they did the response was replacing the drain hose and replacing the seat motor. I asked about the sunroof seal (mine had a gap almost an inch wide) and I stated there was a TJ (35503) for that. They swore up and down they could not find one in the system and it didn’t exist for my VIN. At this point I had called out this TJ at least 3 times to them. I then asked the advisor for his email and sent it over to him. I refused to pick up my car until they had done the sunroof seal as the TJ indicated because just replacing the hose was clearly a bandaid at best with the gap being that large. I’m aware a new seal would shrink eventually, but I thought it would at least get me beyond a year before having to worry about it again. I got the run around for a bit and was finally fed up with the whole thing. The morning after I emailed the TJ over, I called Volvo and opened a case about the issue and later that afternoon I got the call from the advisor that they finally found the TJ and replaced the seal around the sunroof. I don’t think corporate reached out that fast, but who knows. I confirmed the new seal when I picked it up and left thinking the issue would be gone for now.

Now, not even 2 weeks later it rained last night and I walked out to my car to find yet another pool of water in the cargo area. This whole issue is ridiculous and I’m not even sure what my options are. An insurance claim seems lame simply because that’s going to come back on me with rates in the future when I’ve done nothing but drive it with no damage and had all of the regular maintenance done as dictated to keep the warranty. I have an extended warranty until November, but I’m still shocked it happened again so fast.

If anyone has any advice, I’m happy to hear it. I live in Colorado and purchased the car in Washington when I lived there if that makes any difference. I really like this car and didn’t know about this issue until last year, but at this point I’m ready to never buy a Volvo again considering how common this issue seems to be and more importantly the lack of a real fix for it.
