Grant Stahla
Grant Stahla, Co-owner of Stahla Services, a nationwide provider of restroom, shower, and ADA trailer rentals again joins Enterprise Radio.

On this episode, the focus will be on the 10 Station Restroom Trailer, all the benefits and the specifics of renting this particular trailer for your needs.

Listen to host Eric Dye & guest Grant Stahla discuss the following:

(Host Eric Dye): Grant, who’s reaching for this trailer? Can you share the kinds of situations it’s built for and how you figure out if it’s got enough capacity for, say, a big event or a work crew?”

(Guest Grant Stahla):  Yeah, you bet. Excited to talk about the 10 station restroom trailer? It’s one of the biggest, baddest restroom trailers that’s out there, so it’s definitely a trailer that you bring in when you have the most capacity or need the most capacity and have have a good amount of people at your event or at your job site and a lot of times it’s when you have multiple thousands of people, you’re gonna be bringing in a whole line of 10 station restroom trailers. So it’s one of those trailers that you bring in when you have not just hundreds of people, but thousands of people… so excited to talk about it.

(Host Eric Dye): What’s a memorable story of this trailer in action? Maybe a festival, a tough job site, or something unexpected?

(Guest Grant Stahla):  You bet. The 10 station restroom trailers, I think of disaster relief. When there’s hurricanes or floods when you need to be able to support a lot of people at one time, we send 10 station restroom trailers. On a previous episode, we were talking about the 8 stations that are about 20 feet long. These ten stations are 25 feet long, so they have a 25% bigger waste tank and I’ll get to that here in a second. But there’s 10 stalls and there’s the men’s side and women’s side of this trailer. So when you have a hurricane, you’re gonna be setting up a man camp and need to be able to support maybe the National Guard or Samaritan’s Purse, and they’re gonna have all sorts of mobile facilities there. Laundry trailers and shower trailers, mobile kitchens. And then for the restrooms, you’re gonna want the biggest trailer available. So this 10 station really shines in that environment and that’s one of the main things that I think of when I think of the 10 station trailer. Also, the ideal use case for this trailer really, it’s gonna spread the gamut with events, job sites, emergency response, disaster relief. But for all those situations for an event, you’re gonna want that 10 station. It can support one stall per 75 guests, so you’re looking at about 750 guests that it can support based on a four hour event with no alcohol. So you really have a good amount of people, if you end up having a couple thousand people, you might need three of these trailers or one of these for your VIP area and then supplement the rest of them with plastic porta potties with long term jobs, you’re looking at one stall per 15 workers. So you bring one of these trailers in. Maybe you have an office facility with 150 workers, then you’d be able to bring in 1 ten station restroom trailer and support your entire office space while potentially there’s a bathroom remodel or there’s a water main line that went down, but you have to have your people there or else your your business shuts down. You really need that 10 station restroom trailer. So that’s a quick note of when it’s a good fit. And then if you have more people, you can always add more trailers, potentially a 10 station plus a four station, or if you have less people, maybe you’re looking at an 8 station restroom trailer. That’s a quick overview of the usage and capacity, and then also a real world use case when we’re thinking about that disaster relief situation.

(Host Eric Dye): Can you break down the cost of getting this trailer? What’s renting it look like—daily, weekly, or long-term—and what about buying one outright?

(Guest Grant Stahla) : Yeah, that’s definitely an important part of it. So I’m just gonna run through a bunch of numbers and then if you need to just pause this episode and write down the numbers, if you need it to go a little bit slower. But the commercial weekly pricing you’re gonna be looking at about $7000 per week. And then if you need it for 28 days, that’s $10,000. For rough average market cost, if you need to rent it for 2 to 5 months, then you’re going to be looking at $8700 per 28 days, 6 months plus you’re at $7400 per 28 days and then a year and a half or more, you’re looking at about $6200 per 28 days. Now the new purchase price, it’s gonna be about hundred $110,000. For a new purchase price, depending on what you get, that roughly equates to about a year and a half to two years of rental. So the decision to purchase versus rent really just depends on how long you need it and if you’re an asset management company and if you want to manage your own assets versus if you want more of an asset light model and wanna have the experts manage it, that’s when you do rental. There’s additional add-ons, like additional waste tank pump outs that’s gonna be anywhere from $350 to $500 per waste tank pump out. Transportation costs, you’re looking at usually about $4.00 to $5 per loaded mile. Additional cleaning and restocking’s about $250 to $350.00 per time. Generator rental usually it’s about $300.00 to $400.00 for a weekend event and then if you need a monthly generator rental that’s going to be a little bit more. It’s going to be $1500 to $2500 per month, not including additional fuel and then fresh tank water fill you’re looking at about $250 to $300.00 per fresh tank water fill. So I just gave you a bunch of numbers. That was the overview for the rental and purchase cost for this trailer and a bunch of other additional pricing items, so hopefully that was helpful and not too overwhelming.

(Host Eric Dye) : Paint us a picture of this trailer’s design. What do you see walking up to it, and what’s the experience like stepping inside?

(Guest Grant Stahla) : Yeah, absolutely. I’ll give you a quick exterior and interior overview of the 10 stall restroom trailer. So as the name implies, there’s 10 stalls. The trailer’s about 25 feet and then with the tongue it’s about 29 feet. There’s two rooms on this trailer. There’s a men’s side and a women’s side. On the men’s side you’re gonna have 3 urinals and two stalls and two sinks on the women’s side either it’s gonna be 5 stalls and two sinks, and then when you think about stalls, it’s a little bit nicer than your standard public restroom. You’re gonna have individual stalls that typically reach the floor and then almost to the ceiling. There’s a little bit of a gap there to allow air to be able to flow between the area for a hot or cold day. The weight of the trailer is about 10,000 lbs empty, and then there’s two axles, there’s 7000 LB torsion axles, so the gross vehicle weight rating’s 14,000 lbs. A lot of times they’re derated to just under 10,000 lbs. The width is 8 1/2 feet wide without the steps down and then with the steps down you’re looking at about 12 feet the height. Just the box of the trailer is about 11 feet tall and then with that A/C units about 12 feet tall. Freshwater tanks 200 gallons. Wastewater tanks about 950 gallons. The interior of the trailer I already described the two individual rooms with stations inside of them. The finish level a lot of times is an event grade white and gray finish. It looks really nice, but it also can be used for commercial uses as well. And then air conditioner units, there is always gonna be two A/C units on these ten stations because they’re a bigger trailer. And then 12 Vol LED lighting for interior and exterior. There’s a lot of, I would say, about 10 to 15 lights in each stall, and then usually there’s lights lighting up where the steps are on the exterior to help with slippage and then floodlights as well. That’s an overview of the design aspects of the 10 station restroom trailer. Both the exterior and the interior.

(Host Eric Dye) : What does it take to keep this trailer running smoothly? Can you walk us through its water, power, and transport requirements?

(Guest Grant Stahla) : You bet. As I mentioned just earlier, the waste or the fresh water tank size is 200 gallons. Waste is 950 gallons. So to be able to access that fresh water tank, it’s the same as the eight station. There’s a mechanical room on the driver side of the trailer. If you’re pulling the trailer and in that mechanical room is all of the electrical and all the plumbing converges there. There’s usually 2 water, 12 Volt water pumps that the freshwater tank feeds in case you don’t have access to water at your location and need to bring water in. There is a 12 Volt system that does the water pumps and the lights and then a converter and there’s power needs of 2 electrical connections, 110 Volt, 15 amp connections during the summer and that helps power the two air conditioner units and all of the 12 Volt. And then in the winter, you’re gonna have about four connections, and that’ll cover the electric wall heaters and towkake heaters to keep it nice and warm and unfrozen. For transport and for setup, there’s this trailer’s right at 10,000 lbs. So you’d be able to haul it with a three quarter ton you’d be sacking in the back a little bit, but some of them you’d be able to haul it with that. Ideally a 1 ton pickup. And two and five sixteenths ball there’s toe chain connections for safety and seven way connection for trailer brakes and lights and all that and a trailer breakaway connection as well. To set up the trailer, usually it takes about 20 to 30 minutes. There’s just two steps on that for the men’s entrance and the women’s entrance. And a lot of times there’s just a couple pins holding those in with a safety connection and you just pull them straight out and then they drop right down. Sometimes they’re a little bit more complicated and they fold up into each other but usually it’s only about 10 minutes to do the steps and about 10 minutes to level the trailer. And then maybe another 10 to 20 to connect all the water and power and make sure everything’s working. These trailers are built by all the manufacturers – Jag, Satellite, Lang Trailers, Ultra Lav, Black Tie, Ameri-can Engineering, so they’re built by all the trailers and they all built with pretty good quality. Like what I was saying earlier, they’re about $100,000 to $110,000 plus or minus on how nice it finishes you get. But that’s a pretty in depth walkthrough of some of the technical details with plumbing, electrical and the transport for that 10 station restroom trailer.

(Host Eric Dye) : Grant, if listeners need to remember just one thing about this trailer, what should it be?

(Guest Grant Stahla) : Yeah, 10 station restroom trailers are there for when you have 1000 or multiple thousands of people. It’s one of those trailers that you get when you have a lot of people there and you need to be able to support them with air conditioning and heat and running water and soap.
