Mavis Amankwah BEM founder of Marvel Business Group
Can you start by introducing yourself and telling us, in your words, about your inspiring story?
Absolutely! I’m Mavis Amankwah, a businesswoman, speaker, and funding expert with a passion for helping businesses, charities, and social enterprises grow. My journey started over two decades ago when I noticed a gap in the market—BAME businesses, CICs, and underrepresented entrepreneurs weren’t getting the support they needed to access funding, marketing, and strategic planning. I took it upon myself to change that.
Through my companies like Marvel Business Group, I’ve helped hundreds of businesses secure millions in funding, navigate economic downturns, and leverage digital transformation. My work has been recognized globally, and I’ve had the privilege of mentoring many aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly women, to build sustainable businesses.
More recently, I’ve launched The Mavis Amankwah Private Member Club (MAPMC), bringing together ambitious women to network, build strong business relationships, and collaborate in a social setting. It’s about creating a community where women can uplift and inspire each other.
What made you decide to go into business for yourself?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset. Growing up, I saw how businesses could change lives and create opportunities. I also noticed that many businesses—especially those run by people from minority backgrounds—struggled to access the right resources and funding. That inspired me to start my own consultancy, where I could provide tailored support to help businesses succeed.
How did you market your business when it was brand new?
When I launched my first business, I focused heavily on networking and relationship-building. I attended industry events, leveraged social media, and used PR strategies to gain exposure. I also built strong partnerships with organizations that aligned with my mission, which helped me gain credibility and visibility in the business world.
What is a typical day like for you?
Every day is different, but my mornings usually start with emails, strategy meetings with my team, and client consultations. I spend a lot of time working on funding applications, coaching businesses on income generation, and delivering training sessions. I also dedicate time to mentoring female entrepreneurs and overseeing networking events. In the evenings, I often speak at industry events or plan for my next big business initiative.
What are the three most important habits to be a successful entrepreneur?
1. Resilience – Business comes with challenges, and success requires the ability to bounce back from setbacks.
2. Strategic Thinking – Knowing how to plan, pivot, and innovate is crucial for long-term success.
3. Relationship Building – Your network is your net worth. Collaborating with the right people can open doors you never imagined.
If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out, what would it be? Start with a clear vision but remain adaptable. The business world is constantly changing, and flexibility is key to staying ahead. Also, never underestimate the power of mentorship—learning from those who’ve been where you want to go can accelerate your growth.
Yes! Community impact is at the heart of everything I do. Through Marvel Business Group, we’ve supported hundreds of businesses, charities, and CICs in securing funding and growing sustainably. I also run initiatives like Women Like Me, where I mentor and support female entrepreneurs in their business journeys.

What would you consider your biggest accomplishment and why?
One of my biggest accomplishments is helping businesses and social enterprises secure over £18.5 million in funding. Seeing these organizations flourish and make a real impact in their communities is incredibly rewarding. Another highlight was being awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for my services to business and community development—it was a truly humbling experience.
Which female leader do you admire, and why?
I deeply admire Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama—both have built incredible legacies while using their platforms to empower others. Oprah’s journey from adversity to global success is inspiring, and Michelle’s grace, intelligence, and advocacy for women and young people resonate deeply with me.
Do you have a favorite quote or motto that inspires you?
Yes! Two of my favorites are:
Oprah Winfrey – “The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.” This reminds me that we have to step outside our comfort zones and take risks to build the life we truly want.
Michelle Obama – “Success isn’t about how much money you make; it’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.”
This aligns with my mission—helping others grow, secure funding, and create impact is what drives me every day.
