1972 Volvo 1800E. 4 cylinder fuel injected engine, 3 speed Borg Warner auto trans with air conditioning. White exterior, tan interior. All original
Body – some rust bubbles beginning to form in left front headlight bucket and in wheel arches. No cancer throughout the rest of the body, floors are all rust free. Paint is original and buffs/shines
perfectly. No dead spots, no evidence of prior body work.
Chrome – in superb condition. Bumpers shine perfectly with no pitting or oxidation. Front bumper rubber strips are in excellent condition, with no evidence of rot or sun decay. One door guard/beauty strip shows evidence of doing its job, with a few dings (see pictures). All other chrome, from door guards to body line mouldings are in superb condition. Pics will show how straight the body is. Having been under the car I can say that there is NO rust or rust throughs in any of the important and unimportant areas.
Glass – no dings, road rash, cracks etc. Front windshield was replaced after it got cracked, and a new rubber gasket was installed. A second spare gasket will convey with the seal. Door rain guards and seals are all present and in great condition. I’ve seen no evidence or rot or withering. Rear window
seals DO show some signs of sun exposure, but still seal like they should.
Wheels – original, with what I think are older tires. Wheels show evidence of normal wear and use. Spare tire holds air and is, of course, included in the sale. Chrome beauty rings are in superb shape and show no evidence of misuse or neglect. Right rear wheel feels a little wobbly when first getting to speed, but that might be the rotor. New rotors will convey with the sale. Tires have good tread on them still, but came with the car. I have no idea how old they actually are.
Brakes – 4 disk brakes, no evidence of hydraulic oil leaks. Brakes are operational on all 4 corners. E-brake works correctly. Extra NEW rotors will convey with the sale.
Engine – runs like a top. Starts, stops, idles like it should. I have not replaced spark plugs, points or other normal use items, but I have replaced all four injectors (I have rcpts to support this) as well as the fuel pump and filter (also with rcpts). When I bought the car, I replaced the oil and oil filter. Every aspect of the Bosch fuel injection system works like it should. I had plans to replace the gas tank but haven’t been able to get to it – the NEW gas tank and sending unit will convey with the sale. Engine is
smokeless – no white or dark smoke at startup, normal use or acceleration/deceleration.
Transmission – Borg Warner 3 speed auto, goes, stops, moves the car like it should. Gear shifter feels a little less than new, but I’ve got bushings on standby to fix that. Selector knob is a prior owner repair but I’ve got a few wood ones you can chose from that I’ve stored for another car. Zero evidence of
transmission slipping
Suspension – needs a good hug, or I’m just not used to an early 70’s suspension. Conveying with the car are literally every rubber piece and bushing that goes into the steering and suspension, including ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar bushings, tranny mount bushings, etc etc
Interior – seats, seat cushions and door cards are PERFECT. There are NO rips, tears or split seams, and the underlying supports and cushions are in excellent condition. Carpet looks original and shows wear, but no evidence of untangling or tears or rub-throughs. Headliner seems to be original also, with no tears, etc etc. It hangs like it should, with no sags or droops. All mechanical air inlet flaps and sliders are operational and allow/stop interior air movement as they should. Windshield wiper motor knob is missing but wipers are fully functional. Sound system also works, which includes a cassette tape deck (a reason for me to still grin), paired with left/right/center speakers in the back. Speakers
are what looks to be Jensen originals, but the darned things work and work well (another reason for me to grin). I’ll give you some brand new 6x9s I bought for my MGA (too big for that car), but I’d ask you to purchase them separately.
Gauges – the oil temp gauge is inop, but a NEW sending unit will convey with the sale. Tach, speedo and odo are all operational. There are a little more than 153,000 miles on the odometer, and I’m confident they’re original ones (I can’t prove this of course, but the mechanicals all work as they should). Gas gauge likes to fluctuate up and down, but a new tank and sending unit are conveying with the car. Signals, indicators, lights etc all work.
Air conditioning – included with the car and all there, except for the belt. I have yet to test it, as the AC belt was not installed when I purchased it. All interior AC system parts are present, and the blower works as it should
The bads – rust in the left front headlight bucket and in some wheel wells. Rear window seals are dry but operational. Suspension feels like it needs a refresh, but as noted, every rubber bushing has been ordered new and will go with the sale. I was stranded once with this car when I ran myself out of gas
(guessing bad fuel sender, but a new tank and sender unit will convey with the car). It ran poorly after that and I re-replaced the fuel filter, and now the car runs like it did before. I suspect sediment in the tank, but again, a new tank and sending unit will go with the car.
Finally: this is an unrestored and just about perfectly preserved, almost rust free survivor that runs well and starts, stops etc etc like it should. I had great plans for this lovely beauty, including engine upgrades, rust repair, interior and paint color changes, Apple car play install, and more. It kills me to sell the car I’ve always loved dearly, but as I work for the government, my job is “up for review”
