What is a mild hybrid? Mild hybrids are internal combustion engine-powered vehicles that use an electric motor/generator in a parallel hybrid arrangement. A configuration that enables the engine to restart when power is needed again. Power can be necessary after coasting, braking, or stopping the vehicle.

There is a 2023 Volvo mild hybrid lineup available to Midland Park drivers, and we’re excited to get you behind the wheel of one. Contact us at Ramsey Volvo!

What Is The Difference Between A Mild Hybrid And A Hybrid?

Like full hybrid vehicles, mild hybrid cars combine a combustion engine with an electric motor. Unlike true hybrids, they cannot run solely on electric power. Instead, a tiny electric motor is directly affixed to an engine or gearbox, giving the vehicle an acceleration boost.

The mild hybrid technology improves the driving experience. The engine restarts instantly after coming to a complete stop, giving for a smoother ride. The integrated starter generator lowers engine load while driving in cities to save fuel consumption. The integrated starter generator accelerates the combustion engine with recovered electric energy to provide a more impactful acceleration.

New B4, B5, and B6 mild-hybrid variations of the same basic powertrains replace every Volvo model’s T4, T5, and T6 gasoline engines. An electric motor helps the gasoline engine by sharing some load when accelerating or climbing steep inclines.

Your mild hybrid Volvo is powered by a compact battery that charges using energy lost during braking. Mild Hybrids are a more convenient alternative to conventional gasoline-powered vehicles since it eliminates the need to find a public charging station or nightly plug-ins.

Benefits of Mild Hybrids

The mild hybrid, called MHEV or the integrated starting generator (ISG), is a powertrain that combines an electric motor and a combustion engine to reduce CO2 emissions, increase fuel efficiency, and enhance performance. Due to its robust acceleration, you can go from a standstill to a smooth ride.

A more fluid and immediate takeoff is one of the benefits of the mild hybrid, in addition to reduced fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

Every Volvo car has some form of electric propulsion. A Volvo S60 mild hybrid is a good option for anyone seeking a sedan. The EPA estimates are 25/33/28 MPG (City/Highway/Combined). It can pull 2,000 pounds at its maximum capacity when fully outfitted and has 11.6 cubic feet of cargo space.

Consider the three-row Volvo XC90 mild hybrid or the Volvo XC60 mild hybrid if you’re looking for an SUV. The first offers a front-wheel-drive Volvo B5 engine with an EPA-estimated 23/29/25 MPG rating (City/Highway/Combined).

Additionally, you can select an AWD model with either the B5 or the B6 powertrain. It has a maximum cargo capacity of 63.3 cubic feet and a towing capability of 3,500 pounds. The Volvo B5 engine and standard AWD achieve up to 22/28/25 MPG (City/Highway/Combined).

Further offered is the Volvo B6 engine. You receive 85.7 cubic feet of storage space and a 5,000-pound towing capability in return for a little lower fuel efficiency.

All are available in three trim levels: the entry-level Core, mid-level Plus, and top-tier Ultimate.

Although they have a much smaller battery, mild hybrid vehicles are similar to self-charging hybrids. So, the car cannot operate only on battery power, and the battery makes the gasoline or diesel engine run more efficiently.

By 2030, Volvo plans to sell all-electric vehicles; by 2040, it wants to be carbon-neutral. The availability of mild hybrid vehicles advances Volvo’s objective. Be a part of the future today!
