A new flagship takes the throne at Morgan.
Known among automotive enthusiasts for its unique sports cars that features a vintage-inspired design with traditional craftsmanship and materials, Morgan Motor Company is a niche icon in the realm of British automotive manufacturers. For years, Morgan’s flagship was the Plus Six, but this year, the model has been discontinued, with a new flagship promised from the historic manufacturer to be given a new platform and an intensely refreshed design. That new flagship is the new Morgan Supersport, and while it still sports the signature classic, vintage-inspired charm Morgan is known for, the new car is being billed as “a Morgan flagship for the 21st century.”
Built on a new platform, called the CXV aluminum platform, the new Supersport boasts increased torsional rigidity, as well as new and improved steering and suspension solutions. Preserving the analog feeling of Morgan’s signature lineup of sports cars, the new platform modernizes the brand’s cherished sense of driving pleasure.
Luxury is combined with classic charm in the new Morgan Supersport, with the new car boasting an increased degree of usability. This includes features like an interchangeable carbon fiber hard top with a mohair folding soft-top, as well as Bluetooth connectivity, hands-free calling, wireless phone charging, and an audio system courtesy of Sennheiser. Along with that, the new Morgan Supersport is the first Morgan to have a trunk in over a decade, allowing for long trips with luggage and cargo capacity.
Powered by BMW’s B58 TwinPower Turbo inline 6 engine, the new Morgan Supersport develops a hearty 335 horsepower, which is sent to the rear wheels through a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. With the Supersport, Morgan continues a 25-year partnership with BMW that began with the Aero 8 in 2000. The lightweight construction, combined with improved aerodynamic efficiency, an optional Dynamic Handling Pack featuring adjustable dampers and an optional limited slip differential offer a driving experience that thrills despite the quaint looks of the Morgan Supersport.
Made with what Morgan calls “21st Century Coachbuilding,” the new Morgan Supersport features the same design cues and silhouettes that an enthusiast would expect a Morgan to, while the design becomes more minimalistic, clean, and somehow modern. Despite this, the same traditional techniques that Morgan has cherished are preserved, like the ash wood frame that the aluminum body is built upon, and the traditionally upholstered Scottish leather that is used inside. Sustainability is also a focus, with 60 percent of the aluminum on the body and in the chassis being recycled, and the leather being a byproduct of the food and agricultural industry. With the new Supersport as its flagship, the classic appeal of Morgan adapts and evolves into a rapidly futurizing automotive landscape.
