This car has been under our ownership for the last 10 years and we have absolutely loved it. I know its a rare bird out there in the flock of Volvos and have cared for it as such over the last decade. We just had our second child and we had to make the decision to acquire a vehicle that accommodates our growing family. A hard decision – absolutely…we’ve had a lot of adventures in this incredible vehicle over the years and are hoping to pass this along to an enthusiast who can give it another decade of life! Hopefully one who knows more about working on cars than I do, as we were very lucky to get this from an independent Volvo mechanic who has also serviced it the last 10 years. The following info is a mix of narrative from our ownership, what we know about the vehicle, and the larger maintenance that has been more recently. We still have the window sticker from the original purchase, so the log of maintenance is quite deep on this one.
The car was originally purchased by the first owner in Lincolnwood, Illinois for $41,395. The original window sticker is included in the maintenance log. It was then sold at 55k miles to the 2nd owner, and then purchased at auction in Chicago from our Volvo mechanic. It was worked on for a couple months prior to my hearing of its existence while we were looking for a vehicle for my wife. We purchased the vehicle at 84k in 2014.
Above is a picture of the log of maintenance that I’ve kept over the last 10 years, with about 95% of the work on the vehicle being done by our Independent Volvo Mechanic. I religiously completed oil changes every 3,000 miles with synthetic blend 5w-30 and filter replacement.
Notable Information:
- Wife and I have owned the car for the last 10 years – same mechanic has done most of the work over the years – we bought the vehicle from this independent mechanic.
- Has 17” R Pegasus Wheels with All Season Continental Control Contact Sport SRS+ Tires with 80%+ tread.
- A/C compressor and evaporator have been recently replaced and system re-charged, A/C blows cold.
- Regular transmission flush every 1-2 years
- Heater core recently replaced, car blows super warm in cold Michigan Winters
- Oil Changes with Synthetic Blend 5W-30 and new filter every 3,000 miles.
- Includes 1 key, some miscellaneous parts (Volvo Letters for Back Hatch, a Nivimat shock, steering knuckle)
- Stock with the exception of a XModeX ETM, which has a lifetime warranty.
- Had body damage from a side swipe – driver’s side mirror and front bumper, headlight were completely repaired at the time. Documentation is included in the maintenance log
- I had the back bumper repainted, back hatch repainted approximately 6 years ago.
Major maintenance items:
- New A/C Evap and drier 2021
- A/c compressor replaced 2023
- New thermostat 2022
- New heater core 2023
- New driver’s side power window switch 2017
- Full timing belt, front suspension replacement(control arms, ball joints, struts and mounts), water pump, rear hatch struts at 133k
- Replaced downpipe, new catalytic converter 2020
- Engine mount done 2022
- New radiator 2021
- New alternator 2020
- New throttle body 2017
- New rear Nivomat shocks 2017
- Rear Drive Shaft Replacement (from Colorado Drive Shaft) 2018
- New steering rack 2019
- New battery 1/2023 – Duralast Platinum with 3 year warranty.
Larger maintenance needed:
- Burning fuel smell and occasional smoke from tailpipe if vehicle hasn’t been run in a few days. More notable with the AC on and taking air from outside the cabin, not as noticeable with A/C set to cabin air return for hot or cold. I haven’t found a noticeable leak to cause this, but there is occasionally the smell of fuel near the fuel tank.
- ETM is a XModeX module that replaced the original. It intermittently fires an ETM code, but no noticeable change to vehicle function. The XModeX ETM has a lifetime warranty – just need to communicate with the company, mail the module to them for re-soldering, and re-install.
- ABS sensor mounting spot on the steering knuckle is deteriorated, thought to be contributing to the occasional ABS and TRAC code firing. I acquired a steering knuckle replacement from another V70R, as this part is hard to find and expensive. It will be included in the purchase.
- Started having some play with right turns in the front end – likely a control arm bushing wearing out.
- Crack in the exhaust right below the driver’s seat – runs loud right now. From my understanding this is common, we had this fixed about 3 years ago for around $150 with a sleeve welded around the exhaust.
- Rear window wiper motor is seized. I removed the wiper as it was contributing to water collection in the sill under the rear hatch window.
“Quirks” that I’ve noticed:
- Occasionally takes two key turns to start. Has been this way since I took ownership.
- Front dash plastic cracked during Evaporator replacement.
- Headliner sags in the cabin
- One key (!)
- Front left headlight is cracked
- I removed the “Volvo V70R” letters from the back hatch. I have them and included is a diagram with specific measurements of their location.
- CD player and radio (original) do not work. Tape player still works!
- I occasionally hear clicking from the blend door motor behind the dash during the Winter.
- Runs loud right now due to the exhaust separation – this would be the only thing I (the owner) will consider having repaired prior to sale.
- Check engine light has been on since we purchased it – same 3 codes for a very long time. See the pics in the imgur file for specific codes from the OB II reader
- Leaves a single drop of oil occasionally. Our mechanic suspects this is from the turbo
- ETM light, ABS light intermittently come on
- ETM Fix: per our mechanic, XModeX repairs these but you have to pay the cost for shipping
- Repair Steering knuckle: used replacement part included in sale
Cosmetics – Interior / Exterior: (see imgur folder for detailed pictures)
- Rust on back hatch
- Rust on very bottom of passenger side doors
- Clear coat missing: passenger side panel next to hood
- Clear coat missing: spot above windshield
- Crack in driver’s side headlight
- Rip in driver’s seat
- Crack in leather on passenger seat
- Cracked dash plastic (occurred during replacement of evap for A/c)
We’ve loved having this vehicle through our life together – which included hauling around music equipment as we played in different bands, taking road trips, and eventually arguing about who would drive this wagon to work every day. The mileage has stayed low as we both work very close to our home. Not being someone who knows a great deal of how to work on vehicles, it has felt like the time to pass this onto someone who will enjoy it as much as we have the last 10 years. We were very lucky to have a great mechanic within 10 minutes of our home, who has taught me a wealth of knowledge about Volvos and deepened my appreciation for the vehicles… but now is the time for “old Blue” to cruise on. Not many of these left out there!
