Mercedes-Benz recently presented its ‘Mastering Transformation’ roadmap, in which the company said it was readying its biggest ever launch campaign that will see dozens of new or refreshed models until 2027 – 19 internal combustion engine (ICE) and 17 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) based on the presentation slide.
It all begins with the next-generation CLA that has been slowly teased over the months since the reveal of the Concept CLA in September 2023. Set to be the first model based on the carmaker’s MMA (Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture) platform, the upcoming CLA – set to debut this year – will be offered with fully electric and hybrid powertrains.
The former will feature an 800V electrical architecture for ultra-fast DC charging, with the brand claiming a driving range of up to 750 km following the WLTP standard. The newly developed Electric Drive Unit 2.0 (EDU 2.0) will feature on the CLA and vehicles across all segments and be offered in rear and all-wheel drive configurations, with reports indicating a two-speed transmission will be used for the rear electric motor.
As for the hybrid powertrain, it is reportedly developed together with the Geely-Renault joint venture Horse Powertrain and will feature 48V technology and an electrified transmission. We can expect high-performance AMG versions to be introduced as well.
Following the new CLA, Mercedes-Benz says we can look forward to a major upgrade for the S-Class in 2026 as well as an all-electric GLC and C-Class. Mercedes-AMG will also bring out a string of BEV and ICE vehicles too.
Over at Mercedes-Benz’s sub-brands, G will gain a new “baby G-Class” in the future, reconfirming what Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius said in 2023. The relevant presentation slide shows the use of a lowercase ‘g’ for the model but there isn’t much in the way of powertrain details for now, although it has been rumoured that the g-Class will be a pure electric affair that borrows tech from the larger electric G-Class.
Mercedes-Benz noted that its BEVs will use highly modular electric drive units and batteries which are scalable for all segments, including cost-effective lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and advanced nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries, as well as round cells.
