While presenting its 2024 financial results on Capital Markets Day, Mercedes announced that 12 new or facelifted models will be launched by 2027 including the electric Mercedes E-Class.
Mercedes’ announcement of the launch of the electric Mercedes E-Class is surprising as the luxury German carmaker already has an electric model in the segment. Unveiled at the Munich Motor Show in fall 2021 and available on the market from 2022, the Mercedes EQE is not a hit.
The 400V EVA platform doesn’t offer similar charging power to rivals using 800V technology, the materials aren’t as good quality-wise as in the E-Class W214, and the EQE doesn’t have the exceptional ride comfort of the E-Class either. Plus, rear access isn’t as easy as in the new E-Class W214.
After Mercedes dropped development of the Large version of the MB.EA platform last year, rumors surfaced that the EQE would not have a successor. Those rumors are now fueled by Mercedes’ announcement that it will launch an electric Mercedes E-Class by 2027, which would operate in exactly the same Large or Business Class segment as it is known.
Considering that the upcoming S-Class Electric will ditch the aerodynamic shape of the EQS in favor of traditional lines similar to the traditional S-Class limousine, Mercedes’ announcement doesn’t seem all that surprising.
No word yet on what platform the future Mercedes E-Class Electric will be built on. There are only two alternatives.
– The first is less likely that the electric E-Class will use the platform of the conventional E-Class W214.
– The second and most likely would be that the E-Class Electric will be based on the new 800V MB.EA Medium architecture, which will be used for the electric Mercedes C-Class and GLC.
The electric Mercedes E-Class could debut in 2027 when the EQE will end its rather short production cycle of only 5 years. By then, in 2026, Mercedes will launch the new electric C-Class and GLC, and in spring 2025 will start the new electric Mercedes CLA. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Mercedes will also ditch the EQE SUV later in favor of an electric GLE with a more conventional and practical design.
