This is a synopsis of the above thread I thought some might find useful.

So here’s a run down of what it cost and the work that had to be done for a deferred maintenance/ghetto lux mk1 XC90 to bring it back to life/save it from the scrap yard.

Purchased 10/24 $1800 @165,300 miles. 2012 with almost every option.

Known issues when purchased:

Misfire, cam position code, trans holding gear, shot struts, bald tires, power steering whine, low coolant, 5 month out of date inspection/emissions, accessory belt looked horrible, engine mounts looked suspect, broken rear wiper arm, and a whole bunch of burned out bulbs.

Maintenance history was sparse at best.

Bought it as a title only, no registration, in case it was gonna end up a part out (body and interior is a 8/10 and with the exception of the engine splash shield, it was complete.

Almost all the work I did was to address an issue, however some of it was elective and fell under the “at that mileage, if I’m touching it, I’m replacing it” mindset.

The goal was to make it as bullet proof as possible for my soon to be 16 year old son (June 25).

I trailered it home and started immediately.

Working with VIDA/DICE, v-tool and a harbor freight scanner.

Only things it went to a shop for was struts install and tires and alignment. My son and I did the rest.

FCP Euro, Rock Auto and Tasca is where almost all the parts came from.

As of this writing I’ve put about 1800 miles on it.

The first few things I did, I did it with the cheapest parts available, just in case it wasn’t worth saving.

1st set of plugs and coils, Bosch iridium and no name $18 coils

Cabin and engine air filters

Fuel filter

Engine flush and oil change

2, 4 qt transmission drain and fills

Drain and fill both differentials

Haldex service

1 headlight bulb

1st Coolant drain and fill

Front wiper blades, rear arm and blade

Power steering flush and new reservoir

PCV box

Every coolant hose, thermostat, water pump, expansion tank cap and 2nd fill with new coolant.

New intake gaskets

Clean throttle body

Clean MAF

New oil fill cap gasket

New fuel pressure sensor

Cam position sensor, cam lift solenoid (2), cam position solenoid.

12 quart transmission flush

All motor mounts replaced

Front struts

4 tires and alignment

Replace spare tire hoist

Engine splash shield

Brake pads, rotor and soft lines at 4 corners.

Brake fluid exchange

Exhaust replaced from engine block to tail pipe, including all 4 O2 sensors.

2nd engine flush and oil change

2nd set of plugs and coils

The damage:

$4415 @ FCP Euro.

$1734 @ Rock Auto

$2450 @ Tasca

$950 tires and alignment

$650 Amazon, local parts stores, dealer, accessories purchase.

$200 to my Indy mechanic.

So there you have it. This is what it took, with this specific vehicle, in my opinion, get it to a condition that I feel comfortable allowing my new driver to use it.

If doing only what was needed, the damage probably would have been $2-2500 less.
