Power tailgate won’t close automatically (does open) | SwedeSpeed

I replaced both struts as the dealership wanted $150+ to diagnose the issue. I bought 2 struts for $220 a piece from firstvolvoparts.com.

The process was pretty simple, only needed a plastic pry tool, 7mm, 8mm, and 10mm socket and a flat head screwdriver. When you remove a strut, have a second person or use something that will hold the tailgate up. One strut alone will not hold the tailgate up.

I tried to take pictures along the way, so you might see some things already removed. I pretty much took pics as I was putting everything back together.

1) Remove the 3rd row light and side plastic covers (x2).

2) Remove the top cover, pop off airbag plastic logo with pry tool and use 8mm socket to remove screw. I pulled first from the window side and worked by way across the bottom of the plastic piece. Be careful removing this piece as clips, etc may fall off.

3) Remove the seat belt plastic cover using a 10mm socket (its a plastic nut so use extra care not to strip it). I pulled first from the window side and worked by way across the bottom of the plastic piece. Be careful removing this piece as clips, etc may fall off.

4) Next pull the liner down some, do not pull to hard and make sure you removed the light and plastic covers in step 1.

5) Remove x2 airbag screws (7mm socket). The screw will stay with the airbag so do not worry about dropping it or losing it. The metal black clip holding the top screw will fall off, but it is easy to put back when you put everything back together.

6) Unclip this plug (there is a small plastic clip you can push back and slide out easily). Also trace this harness back and remove any tape holding it down and it should be loose.

7) Pull on this rubber piece and pull the entire wire harness out. Mine came out easily.

8) Remove clip on both sides of the strut using a flat head screwdriver. Pull and remove strut. I had to use force and this was probably the hardest part of the install for me. I did not want to break anything. (Be careful as one strut is not enough to hold the tailgate up). I used a telescopic broom to hold tailgate up and did both struts together.

9) You can verify and test everything now and then reverse these steps and put everything back together.

Hope this helps others as my dealership wanted $1200+ to do this repair. I was able to spend $465 on parts and did the install in about a hours time.
