Ridetech is pleased to release their first-ever performance subframe for popular 1967-1969 F-body and 1968-1974 X-body platforms. The brand has listened to builders and customers and has delivered key improvements for those restoring an F-body for performance or show. Read on to see why Ridetech’s latest creation is sure to top F- and X-body builders wish lists alike.
Fitting wider front wheels and tires on first gen F-bodies has always been a pain point. Factory subframe rails limit wheel and tire width selection, often contacting the subframe and reducing turning radius on wider setups. Ridetech’s subframe design incorporates a 2” inch clearance improvement on each side, reducing likelihood of contact with wider setups. Ridetech found their best combination with a 18”×10” wheel with a 6.5” backspace.
The subframe is manufactured out of ASTM A-500 steel and is powder coated satin black for a durable, attractive, and corrosion resistant finish. The subframe features updated suspension pick up points which achieve more desirable geometry (caster, roll center, Ackermann and camber gain) translating to substantial performance and handling gains. Attractive one-piece billet T6061 aluminum upper control arms and tubular lower control arms attach to high-quality Pro Forged ball joints before pairing to either Ridetech’s AFX pin or hub spindles.
Ridetech’s pin spindle option is ideal for those wanting to retain OE-style braking systems or those who have already invested in an upgraded brake system utilizing a pin style hub. However, if the latest in available braking technology is desired, their AFX hub spindle accommodates popular C5/C6/C7 Corvette hubs, which allow installation of factory or aftermarket C5/C6 brake packages.
Keeping modularity in mind, Ridetech made it possible to utilize either coil-overs or their well-known Shockwave® air suspension. Fox Factory monotube coil-overs or ShockWaves can be had in single, rebound adjustable HQ series or their triple adjustable TQ series (low, high-speed compression and rebound) iterations, keeping the front tires glued to the street or the track. Impact forged aluminum shock bodies provide superior strength and fade free performance. The larger 1.834’’ piston provides outstanding ride quality and 24-positions of adjustability allow fine-tuning the responsiveness of each front corner.
Both steering feel and feedback are vastly improved over stock via the integration of a Fox-body style rack and pinion unit (sold separately). Old or worn-out factory-style steering components suffer from a disconnected feel and sense of wandering. This rack and pinion design provides a much more direct feel and positive steering response. This translates to more confidence behind the wheel, especially during spirited drives.
Ridetech’s new subframe accommodates a host of popular engine and transmission combinations. Engine mount plates accept a range of popular GM powerplants including GM’s current gen direct-injection GM LT, LS engines, or conventional small block Chevy or big blocks. An adjustable transmission crossmember allows for popular old school and late model automatic and manual transmissions.
Whether you’re building a street cruiser, track bruiser, or showstopper, Ridetech’s subframe will absolutely improve the feel, performance, and ride quality of F- or X-body platforms well beyond the 50+ year old factory components could offer. The subframe is designed with compatibility in mind, meaning installation alongside Ridetech’s full catalog of bolt-on F-body 4-link systems, rear axles, subframe connectors, etc. all work together seamlessly to take the handling and performance of these platforms to an even higher level.
