2025 Mazda 6e EV: UK launch could hint at Australian plans

Mazda has revealed the new 6e electric vehicle (EV) for the European and UK markets, serving as an electric successor to the long-running Mazda 6 mid-sizer.

Debuting at the Brussels motor show in Belgium, the 2025 Mazda 6e will go on sale in Europe during the northern hemisphere’s summer, indicating availability in June-August.

The UK will get a right-hand drive version in 2026 – which could mean a future Australian launch for the brand’s new Tesla Model 3 competitor, too.

Only preliminary details have been confirmed for the European model, with 68.8kWh and 80kWh battery variants to be offered – the former is lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and the latter is nickel manganese cobalt (NCM).

Driving range is quoted at between 479km and 552km against an unidentified test cycle.

Both versions feature a single electric motor powering the rear axle, offering about 180kW of power and 320Nm. Zero to 100km/h takes a claimed 7.6 seconds with the smaller battery, and 7.8 seconds with the larger long range unit.

As for charging, both versions quote a 200kW capacity using a DC charger, making for a 10-80 per cent charge time of 22 minutes for the 68.8kWh version and 45 minutes in the 80kWh model.

The Mazda 6e will serve as a spiritual successor for the Mazda 6 sedan in Europe and the UK, and is the global export version of the Chinese-market Mazda EZ-6 developed with local partner Changan.

While only available as an EV in export markets, the EZ-6 is also available with a long-range plug-in hybrid (PHEV) drivetrain in the Chinese domestic market.

The Mazda 6e measures 4921mm long, 1890mm wide and 1491mm tall, making it 56mm longer, 50mm wider and 41mm taller than the existing combustion-powered Mazda 6 sedan.

CarExpert has reached out to Mazda Australia for further comments regarding a sales launch Down Under given the global availability of right-hand drive, and is awaiting a response. Stay tuned for an update.
