AutoHunter Spotlight 1987 Porsche 928 S4

Of all the Porsche models ever built my favorite is still the Porsche 928. This model, not the 911, was the car I most wanted when I was in high school in the 1980s. It was the car I had a poster of on my wall, and the one I dreamed about. I actually worked in a Porsche shop in High School and in around 1983 I delivered one of these cars, a Moss Green Metallic with Tan leather, back to the owner after we had performed the service on it. The car stunned me with its incredible solid build quality and complete lack of body lean in high speed corners. It was an automatic but that seemed to suit the nature of the 928 quite well. Driving that car solidified my opinion of the 928 as being the greatest Porsche road car of the 1980s and one of the finest GT cars ever built.

Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1988 Porsche 928 S4.

The seller describes this 1988 928 as being powered by its original 5.0L DOHC V8 that is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The car is finished in Alpine White over a black leather interior, and is offered by the selling dealer with the original owner’s manual, three keys, temporary spare tire, tool kit, clean CARFAX report, and clear title.

The exterior of this 928 S4 looks to have paint in good condition, and I saw no major flaws with the car in the photos provided. It is in no way a concours level example, but instead a driver level car with some needs that looks like it can be enjoyed for years as you work to make the car better. The one immediate change I would make to the exterior is to replace the 2007 Porsche Macan 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels with a set or correct original 16″ original Porsche alloys, something easily sourced on eBay or Facebook Marketplace.

The interior of this 928 actually looks to be in pretty good shape, with leather seats that don’t seem to show any rips or tears. The dashboard does have the very common cracks that happen over time with these cars, but that is something to take care of over time. Being me I would replace the Moto steering wheel with a correct factory steering wheel immediately and also likely replace the aftermarket stereo with the Porsche Classic Radio. Finally I would replace the shifter with the correct Porsche part, easy to find used for about $200.

Under the hood of this car looks excellent with the 5.0 liter V8 in nice shape. I would have a pre-purchase inspection done on any classic car and use that to determine the mechanical shape of it. If you hurry I am sure you can get that scheduled with the seller.

As a bonus the 928 S4 also does include its original owners manual, service manual and tools, things that tend to go missing over time. This is a car that, if bought correctly, offers so much Porsche greatness in a fun to drive, fast, and comfortable package.

The auction for this 1988 Porsche 928 S4 ends on Friday, January 3, 2025 at 11:45 a.m. (MST).
