The front kit was really just plug and play, just disconnect the old ones and mount the new speakers. Wiring and the plugs were all in the right place. The rear kit on the other hand required some mods and additional hardware. The lower 6.5 mid-bass speaker just dropped in like in the front, but my car didn’t have any tweeters in the rear. The brackets are already in the door cards, so it’s just a matter of finding some screws and washers, which I luckily found in my “parts and screws” box from previous audio upgrades. On the pic you can also see, that there’s a provision for an additional speaker, but it’s smaller than the front ones. Since there was also no wiring for the tweeter, I used the additional harness that came with the kit. I had 4 harnesses, but since I didn’t need any in the front, I still had some “spares” and could modify them because there are 2 problems with the harness:
1) The harness is too short. If you plug in the 6.5 speaker, the next plug in line is the tweeter and there is not enough length to reach the tweeter, not even close. So I cut off the additional plug for the non-existent smaller speaker and used that cable to elongate the wire so it would reach the tweeter. But all in all, really not that bad to do. I hate working with wires and everything electric since I have no real experience, but that was really not hard to do.
2) The plug for the tweeter wouldn’t click into the receptacle. It physically fits, but won’t click in, so it’ll become lose and fall off. But that was also a pretty easy fix. I used a knife to scrape of just a bit of the plastic tab on the tweeter receptacle, where the plug should click in. There’s like 0,5mm too much material so it can’t get in all the way. So after a litte scraping it clicked and worked as intended.
So all in all: Front speaker upgrade with the ZDSV1 was really plug and play, very easy and it’s done in an hour or so.
The rear kit ZDSV2 has a few flaws, but maybe it has to do with my cars spec, no idea. But those little flaws aren’t a deal breaker and pretty easily fixable, so it’s still a good kit in my opinion.
Also here are some pics:
Speakers on the left are the Phoenix Gold, right is OEM Volvo. This is the front set, the rear is the same minus the mid-sized speakers on the bottom right.
The additional hardware I needed to mount the rear tweeters since my car didn’t have any tweeters from factory in the rear door cards
Mounts are already there, just added above mentioned hardware. To the right you can also see the placeholder for another speaker. The cover is just held in with a few slim pieces of plastic you can easily break off or cut with a knife to open the hole, also there are already points to thread in some screws. So all you’d need is some wiring.
Thanks for this, looks like I might start with the front kit.
