When GMC introduced the Hummer all-electric pickup truck, the SUV version followed quickly. Electric vehicle (EV) startup Rivian followed the same path with its R1T and R1S. These vehicles give EV buyers options in the growing electric truck and SUV world. The GMC Hummer EV SUV and Rivian R1S aren’t the only all-electric SUVs, but they are standout options in the segment; they’re uniquely styled vehicles with plenty of power and comfort.
Let’s compare them side-by-side to determine which one might be the best choice for you and your family.
2025 GMC Hummer EV SUV

The slightly smaller sibling of GMC’s Hummer all-electric pickup, the Hummer EV SUV stands out in the crowd. The original military-spec SUV produced last century inspired the big, bold behemoth’s design cues. However, like its pickup sibling, it’s friendlier to the environment.
The massive people mover easily carries five passengers and all their stuff, though it is nearly a foot shorter than its pickup truck sibling. Like the pickup, the SUV uses technology to improve the driving experience — on-road and off-road. Some of that tech is less obvious until you’re behind the wheel, like rear-wheel steering, while you must employ the others, such as UltraVision, CrabWalk mode, Super Cruise, and more, with a purpose.
For 2025, the Hummer goes from four trims to just two: 2x and 3x. The 2X base model uses a 2-motor setup generating 570 horsepower and has a 315-mile range. The 3-motor 3x edition can travel as far as 312 miles on a full charge. The three 3-motor trims put out up to 830 hp. Prices start at $98,845, including the destination charge.

2025 Rivian R1S

Rivian’s R1S all-electric SUV tangles with the Tesla Model X, Kia EV9, and, of course, the GMC Hummer EV SUV.
In many ways, what you see is what you get with the R1S. It looks like a conventional large 3-row SUV, except for the front fascia and headlights. That look is likely part of the appeal of the R1S — one less new thing to deal with. On the inside, the R1S deserves praise for its superior craftsmanship as well as its sensible placement and use of technology.
Rivian builds the R1S in four configurations for 2025: Dual Standard, Dual, Tri Max, and Ascend Tri Max. The base powertrain remains a 533-hp dual-motor setup that allows you to handle almost any situation on or off-road. You can escape trouble quickly, racing from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. If you move up to the Quad model with its 1,025 hp and 1,198 lb-ft of torque, the time drops to 2.5 seconds. Depending upon configuration, the R1S can travel from 270 to 410 miles on a single charge. The R1S has an air suspension system with adaptive shock absorbers and an electro-hydraulic roll control system that does away with traditional anti-roll bars. Prices start at $77,700, including the destination fee.
Rivian R1S Highlights
Driving modes: Rivian’s All-Purpose driving mode, which drivers will use most of the time, self-adjusts the suspension to suit driving conditions, including lowering the ride height to improve freeway aerodynamics. Also, if you’re concerned about having enough juice to get to a charger, the Conserve mode engages just the front-wheel drive and lowers the ride height.
3-row seating: Despite its visual mass, the GMC Hummer EV SUV only seats five. The more family-friendly Rivian R1S has standard 3-row seating for up to seven.
Better range and efficiency: The Rivian R1S has an impressive maximum range (in Dual trim) of up to 410 miles, which beats the Hummer EV SUV’s maximum rating by 95 miles. It’s also significantly more efficient. According to EPA estimates, the Rivian’s monthly fuel costs are approximately $45 lower than the Hummer.

The Hummer EV SUV and R1S incorporate the best from their truck siblings, such as a powerful drivetrain, quick charging capability, a spacious cabin, and off-road capability.
Conclusion
These EV SUVs match up closely in many ways. One of the most significant differences is price; the starting price for the Hummer EV SUV is $20,000 higher than the R1S. The Hummer is incredible for showing off, and there’s nothing else quite like it, but the lower price tag and fuel costs, better warranty and range, and extra seats make the Rivian R1S the more practical choice, for the most part. Cautious buyers may feel more secure with the legacy GMC brand than with the newly minted Rivian, but there’s no indication Rivian is on shaky ground right now.
