I recently purchased a 2016 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design Drive-E Platinum. The problem I was having is about 1 in 5 times when I would start up the car, I would get no audio from the sound system. I then tried pushing buttons on the top row of the infotainment system and nothing worked. I could push the power button for mute and it would show mute then unmute when pushed again, but still no sound. I would then reach my destination, turn the car off and when I would come back later…maybe 10 mins or 1 hour, the system would work fine when the car was started. It was getting annoying and worrisome since this vehicle was new to me. I tried disconnecting the battery for 20 mins and that did not fix it. I saw a post that it could be the satellite radio causing the problem. I have read that people were giving advice to place an optical loop jumper connector to totally bypass the satellite radio and that would solve the problem but you will never have satellite radio with this loop jumper installed. I did not want to accept this since I DO want SiriusXM in my ride.
Solution:
I released the rear seats to fold down and could see the satellite receiver at the base of the rear seats. There are 2 orange looking wires (which are actually fiber optic cables) plugged into the satellite receiver. I pulled on the cables gently and they popped right out. The clip that holds and snaps in place was not doing its job apparently. I used a small piece of insulation stripped from a wire and folded it and wedged it in to make the clip grab in place. It then held fine. I gently tried to pull the connector out and it was stable. This weekend I am going to dab a small amount of clear silicone gel to the piece and make it so it can be removed if I ever need to.
Of this set of two fiber optic cables, one of them runs from the infotainment system to the satellite receiver and the other one returns the media signal along with satellite radio and if that connection is broken by either fiber, you get a dead system function including settings for the vehicle like light preferences, steering settings, remote lock settings, ESC & much more. I am attaching pictures as to help anyone that might have the same problem. It is an easy fix so don’t take it to the dealer or shop until you’ve checked this yourself first. Feel free to message me or reply in this post and I will be glad to help.
BTW, I just upgraded from a 2012 S60 T5 (2.5L Turbo 245hp / Flamenco Red Metallic) to a 2016 R-Design (2.0L Turbo/Supercharger 302hp / Passion Red) and love the upgrade!!
Volvo since 2018,
