It all started with a seized headlight wiper and lead to me noticing an oil mess on my oil pan coming from somewhere on the front of the engine and under the coil plug cover.
Checking the records I have from the previous owner, I didn’t see anything about a PCV replacement, so I assumed it was due with ~119k on the clock.
After a ton of research, it seemed like the lower intake manifold bolt by the thermostat and the PCV coolant banjo bolt were going to be trouble.
I ordered a 1/4″ 10mm swivel bit (TEKTON 1/4 Inch Drive x 10 mm Universal Joint Socket | SHD08110) to help with the intake manifold bolt.
It sounds like you can just cut down a 1/4″ 10mm socket and add a swivel bit to get this to work, but I figured for $11, It’s worth adding another tool I’ll likely never use again to my arsenal.
I was going to buy a stubby 17mm wrench to get the banjo bolt, but I couldn’t find it locally, so decided I’d cross that bridge when I got there.
Here is my list of parts:
On top of the PCV, I’m also tackling:
- Repainting my front bumper
- Dying my fog light surrounds
- Replacing my driver headlight wiper motor
- trying to diagnose my spongey brakes (has been bled a couple times)
It’s hard to get a solid chunk of time to dedicate working on it, so I end up working on it for 20-30 minutes at a time.
If you find a square gasket after your remove your fuel rail, they go in the electrical plugs for the fuel injectors:
It looks like this job has been done on my car after all, but regardless, it’s due for replacement.
Took some time to clean up the injectors while they were out.
Connected each to a power source, and sprayed brake clean through them until the spray pattern was consistent, scrubbed the outside with a nylon brush, and replaced both o-rings on each injector
As of my last lunch brake, I have the intake manifold off and have found the leak (I think).
I didn’t end up needing a stubby 17mm wrench – After the manifold was off, I was able to fit a 17mm wrench over the alternator and by the power steering pump and work it out that way.
Next up, getting this thing outta here, engine cleaned, throttle body removed and cleaned, then begin assembly
Haven’t decided if i want to tackle replacing the full coolant pipe (sounds like a real pain) or just replace the banjo fitting and associated rubber lines. 🤔
