Second row armrest cup holder replacement | SwedeSpeed

Greetings! As I’ve searched through the SPA XC90 section, I’ve noticed a relatively common issue with the second row cup holders hasn’t gotten a write up on how to swap/fix it. Since it was my turn to deal with this failure point I decided to go ahead and put one together for whoever the next lucky person is. So here we go.

Note* This is for the second row armrest cup holders in the 7 seat configuration xc90 2016+.

1. These are the tools and parts you’ll need if you are replacing everything.
31467148: cup holder
31467149: frame
(If only taking apart to clean or remove gunk, candy etc you’ll just need the bone tool or some kind of trim tool to not scratch the plastic bits)

2. Starting from the rear, press your trim tool under the area depicted here in order to pry the first two clips holding the frame to the cup holders.(mine was already broken)

3. After these are lifted, you’ll want to let the front half rest. (It is still clipped by the two front tabs which we will see later.)

4. These two tabs will need to be pressed in, grab your trim tool and push in. Once pushed in you will need to lift up just enough to get the tab over the lip. Do the same to the other side after.

A clearer look at them removed.

5. Once you have both tabs off, the cup holder will be loose and free. You will need to lift the rear up and then pull the entire assembly toward the rear of the car and up.

6. You will be left with this. You can see where the front retaining tabs are now more clearly.

7. Repeat in reverse for assembly.

NOTE**these are important tips.

1. As to not snap your new cover, it is advised to place the front two clips from the frame onto the cup holder retainers.

2. Place the cup holder with the frame (and two front clips secured) into the armrest retainers identified in step 6 of removal.

3. Ensure you secure the two larger retainer tabs identified in step 4 of the removal.

4. Press the rear down ensuring these are clicked in using your trim tool to push down. (There will be an audible snap)

5. Lastly the two upper clips identified in removal step 2 will need to be pressed in. This is simply done by pressing on the rear of the frame until you hear them snap in place.

6. You are all set and can enjoy your new/cleaned armrest cup holders.

Start to finish, this took about 10 mins to complete. Hardest part is not being too rough and breaking the retaining clips. Hopefully this helps someone out there.
