Grant Stahla, Co-owner of Stahla Services, a nationwide provider of restroom, shower, and ADA trailer rentals again joins Enterprise Radio.
On this episode, the focus will be on the 8 Station Mobile Laundry Trailer, all the benefits and the specifics of renting this particular trailer for your needs.
Listen to host Eric Dye & guest Grant Stahla discuss the following:
(Host Eric Dye): Grant, who’s reaching for this trailer? Can you share the kinds of situations it’s built for and how you figure out if it’s got enough capacity for, say, a big event or a work crew?”
(Guest Grant Stahla): Yeah, good question. These 8 station laundry trailers or any laundry trailers are definitely a specialty trailer, but some of the core audiences are disaster relief organizations like FEMA or Red Cross. We also have them at large construction sites and pipeline camps, so a campsite where people are out working, large construction, weeklong music festivals and county fairs, military field exercises, National Guard; basically anytime where you have a big group of people gathering for multiple days. Some of the capacity rule of thumbs for the amount of loads or shifts that one trailer could handle is typically you’re going to have eight stack sets in one of these trailers so this is what we’re talking about is 8 station laundry trailer, where you’re going to have a set of a wash and a dryer in there. So you have eight of those with that trailer, you can do 80 to 90 loads in about a 10 hour shift. So that gives you a little bit of a perspective 80 to 90 loads in a 10 hour shift. Event planning. So you can plan one washer and dryer per 75 volunteers or guests per day and then for work camps it’s one washer per 15 workers on multi day projects. And then you know whether to upgrade or downgrade, whether to add units if you exceed more than 100 loads per day, or you can downgrade to maybe a 4 stack trailer for a pop up clinic, or an under 75 person crew.
(Host Eric Dye): What’s a memorable story of this trailer in action? Maybe a festival, a tough job site, or something unexpected?
(Guest Grant Stahla): Yeah, you bet. So one of the memorable stories is Hurricane Relief Base Camp in Florida. Last year, volunteers processed over 600 lbs of laundry daily, and then the barrel spiked once the fresh clothes arrived because you just don’t want to be walking around in dirty clothes, it’s something that adds a little bit of humanity back to you and sanity back to you in a disaster situation. Another situation, the music festival with over 50,000 attendees, the backstage laundry kept crews uniforms photo ready and ready to go and presentable preventing $5000 plus in rush cleaning fees. So you have that on site, laundry trailer there for all of your laundry needs. You can see case study videos on the laundry trailer page at Stahla.com.
(Host Eric Dye): Can you break down the cost of getting this trailer? What’s renting it look like—daily, weekly, or long-term—and what about buying one outright?
(Guest Grant Stahla): Absolutely, yeah. So rental rates, of course they range all over the place. But I’ll just kind of give you some ranges and then depending on the season and availability, they’ll be unique to your situation. But typically daily rates for laundry trailers $1200 to $1500 per large laundry trailer. A weekly rate, you’re gonna be looking at between $3000 and $4500 dollars and then a 28 day or a monthly rate, you’re looking at between $9,000 and $11,000 typically. Obviously, that’s gonna range a little bit. If you’re renting it for one month versus 12 months, one month, that’s gonna be on the higher end versus if you’re looking for a year, it’s gonna be a little bit lower than that. And then typical add-ons for an 8 station laundry trailer, you’re gonna be looking at extra pump outs or gray water tank evacuation is about $450 to $550 per pump out. Transport and set up your about 4.50 to $5 per mile plus a $1500 flat rigging fee. If you need a generator rental and you don’t have any shore power, then you’re at about $200 to $250 per day for that, and then a fresh water fill is $350 to $600 per trip. Switching over to ownership costs a new eight station laundry trailer list for about 100,000 to $160,000, depending on what tanks you have and if you have ADA options as well, and then a used laundry trailer, something that’s maybe three to five years old is about 80,000 to $100,000, then you can buy those from disaster contractors, municipalities, rental companies like us, large festival promoters, event planners small GCS and relief NGOs. So that kind of wraps up some of the pricing for that rental and purchase costs.
(Host Eric Dye) : Paint us a picture of this trailer’s design. What do you see walking up to it, and what’s the experience like stepping inside?
(Guest Grant Stahla): You bet. Yeah, happy to do that. So typically the length of the trailer, the box of the trailer’s about 26 feet long with the tongue you’re about 31 feet. The width of the trailer is about 12 1/2 feet with the steps down. The height with the laundry stacks you’re about 12 feet tall total. The freshwater tank is about 220 gallons and then the wastewater tank is about 1000 gallons for wastewater. Your axles typically it’s going to be tandem axles, so you’ll have two 7000 LB torsion axles and then your water heater is typically you’ll have two 200,000 BTU tankless water heaters in there. Some other specs the access is curbside man door and you have a rear roll up utility bay for the mechanical room door. And then on the interior you’ll typically have 8 front load washers, 4 1/2 cubic feet washers and then 7 1/2 cubic feet dryers. You’ll have non slip rubber coin flooring, FRP walls, led ceiling strips, 20X40 inch stainless folding counters, overhead cabinets and then also you’ll have ducted HVAC heat and 13.5000 BTU A/C units keeping the trailer exactly where you want it between 70 and 75°. That wraps up the design and the specs for those laundry trailers.
(Host Eric Dye) : What does it take to keep this trailer running smoothly? Can you walk us through its water, power, and transport requirements?
(Guest Grant Stahla): Yeah, you bet. So with that water tank, the 225 gallon fresh 1000 gallon waste tank. The waste tank’s actually going to be for gray water because it just runs off of that. The washers, you’ll have pex plumbing in there, and then the dual on demand propane heaters. And then for electrical, typically you’ll have four connections to 15 AMP 120 Volt shore power and then for propane, the dryer’s cut out the electrical loads by 35% because it’s propane powered. So then it’s also generator ready. Transport and set up you’ll need at least a three quarter ton truck like an F-250 or RAM 2500, ideally with a diesel powered engine. And then you’ll also need a brake controller. You’ll need levels and chalks. You’ll need to deploy the stabilizers if you have them, and then be able to connect water and power when you get onsite as well. Typically, that’s gonna be about 45 minutes for a crew of two people. And then the build quality on these are excellent. You have ISO certified plants, you have full welds, marine grade wiring and five year structural warranties for most of the main brands. Some of the main brands are Satellite, Jag, Lang, American Engineering and Rich Restrooms. That’s some of the technical details with plumbing, electrical and transport.
(Host Eric Dye) : Grant, if listeners need to remember just one thing about this trailer, what should it be?
(Guest Grant Stahla): Yeah, absolutely. Well, if your site needs 80 plus loads in a day in any weather, the 8 station laundry trailer is the plug and play answer. Just add water and power.
