2026 MG CyberX concept revealed as preview to rugged electric SUV

2026 MG CyberX concept revealed as preview to rugged electric SUV

MG’s electric SUV concept with Land Rover-like styling has been revealed, but it is likely a while away from Australian showrooms if it lands locally at all.

The MG CyberX concept has been officially revealed at the 2025 Shanghai motor show – one of a swathe of new MG models due in China in the next two years – but a production version is still sometime off appearing in Australian showrooms.

The CyberX concept is the second MG introduced under its youth-oriented Cyber brand after the MG Cyberster electric sports car went on sale – including in Australia – in 2024.

The car maker issued a pair of teaser images last week, showing the boxy off-road exterior reminiscent of the Land Rover Defender or Jeep Wrangler.

Now, MG has revealed the exterior of the CyberX in full at the Shanghai motor show, but the vehicle remains a concept with no interior or further details on the SUV’s electric powertrain.

Despite not being immediately showroom ready, the new electric SUV could form part of a new model onslaught which has MG Australia aiming to become a top three best-selling brand here by 2030.

The CyberX is the first vehicle to use the new-generation ‘E3’ dedicated electric platform from parent company SAIC Motor (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation).

It also brings ‘cell-to-body’ (CTB) construction where the battery forms part of the body structure, saving weight and complexity while improving driving dynamics.

With its 2030 top-three goal, MG revealed the diesel-powered MG U9 dual-cab ute at the 2025 Melbourne Motor Show as one of a swathe of new models heading to Australian showrooms.

The MG S5 SUV is due here imminently and will be joined mid-year by the MG QS seven-seat SUV as well a cheaper entry-level MG 3 small hatchback.

The U9 – a rival to the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux and Kia Tasman – is due in Australia by the end of 2025 and will be followed by an updated MG 4 electric car in early 2026.
