Redesigned compact SUV pairs fresh looks and tech with a familiar powertrain.

Mazda recently pulled the wraps off the 2026 CX-5. This will mark the third design generation for its most popular vehicle. The revamped compact SUV will feature updated styling, a roomier cabin, and upgraded technology.
2026 Mazda CX-5: Coming Soon
Dimensions
Exterior dimensions have increased, with the new model measuring 4.5 inches longer in overall length and wheelbase compared to its predecessor. It is also 0.6 inches wider. The redesigned body incorporates sharper lines and a more upright profile, with a larger front grille, revised “signature wing” element, and slimmer LED headlights and taillights. Per modern vehicle design tradition, the rear will feature a “MAZDA” wordmark in block lettering in place of the brand’s logo.
Interior and Passenger Space

The interior benefits from the larger footprint. Mazda says rear legroom, knee room, and headroom have been improved, and rear door openings are now wider and more accessible. The cargo area is longer and taller than before, with a lower liftover height for easier loading. A panoramic sunroof will be available for the first time.
Cabin and Connectivity
The cabin design continues Mazda’s minimalist aesthetic, with new ambient interior lighting and improved materials. A 10.25-inch center display remains standard, while a new 15.6-inch touchscreen—the largest Mazda has ever offered—will be optional. The larger screen incorporates Google built-in services, with access to Google Maps, Google Assistant (via its Gemini AI assistant), and apps through the Play Store.
Engines
Under the hood, the 2026 CX-5 carries over the outgoing model’s 2.5-liter 4-cylinder “SkyActiv-G” engine. It produces 187 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Mazda says a gas/electric hybrid powertrain, based on its new SkyActiv-Z system, will be introduced in 2027. Expect the hybrid to replace the potent turbocharged 4-cylinder that was available on the previous-generation CX-5.
Prices
Pricing and full trim/feature details will be announced closer to its scheduled on-sale date in early 2026.

CG Says:
Mazda’s CX-5 has long been the sports car among mainstream compact SUVs. We expect the redesigned 2026 model to continue in this tradition, offering engaging driving experience paired with upscale cabin appointments. Hopefully the new infotainment system with Google built-in will help alleviate concerns we’ve had about the outgoing model’s unintuitive operation. Stay tuned for our full report.
