Toyota has officially launched the Crown Estate in Japan, where it goes on sale in two variants – the Estate RS plug-in hybrid, and the Estate Z hybrid, both with E-Four all-wheel-drive. This is the latest of the four Crown bodystyles to go on sale in its native market, after the Crossover, Sport, and Sedan.
The market launch of the Crown Estate in Japan comes after Crown Sport Hybrid in October 2023, and then the Crown Sport PHEV in December that year. In the United States, the Crown Estate bodystyle is sold as the Crown Signia.
Featuring electrified drive in plug-in hybrid and hybrid forms, the Crown Estate RS PHEV is priced at 8,100,000 yen (RM243,036), while the Crown Estate Z Hybrid is priced at 6,350,000 yen (RM190,544). Both hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions use the 2,487 cc A25A-FXS naturally aspirated petrol engine.
The combustion engine in the Crown Estate PHEV is rated with slightly lower outputs than that of the hybrid; the 2.5L petrol unit in the PHEV makes 177 PS at 6,000 rpm and 219 Nm at 3,600 rpm, while the unit in the hybrid makes 190 PS at 6,000 rpm and 236 Nm from 4,300 rpm to 4,500 rpm.
Electric drive in the E-Four driveline for both features a 5NM motor on the front axle that outputs 182 PS and 270 Nm, while the rear axle gets a 4NM motor rated to produce 54 PS and 121 Nm. The Crown Estate PHEV is capable of running up to 89 km in EV mode with a lithium-ion battery rated at 51 Ah; the battery in the hybrid is rated at 5 Ah.
In terms of charging for the Crown Estate PHEV, A full charge from 200 V /16 A will take five hours and 30 minutes, while charging from 200 V/30 A will take three hours and 30 minutes; a full charge from 100 V/6 A will take 33 hours, according to the Toyota official website. Meanwhile, fast charging to 80% SoC will take approximately 38 minutes.
Measuring 4,930 mm long, 1,880 mm wide and 1,625 mm tall with a 2,850 mm wheelbase, the Crown Estate is 210 mm longer than the curvier Crown Sport and the same height. Here, the more square-cut Crown Estate holds 470 litres in its luggage compartment, or up to 1,470 litres with its rear seats folded, where it yields a flat space of up to two metres in length, says Toyota.
Suspension is by MacPherson struts in front and a multi-link setup at the rear, while rolling stock is a set of 21-inch x 8.5J alloy wheels shod in 233/45R21 tyres; the Crown Estate RS PHEV and the Crown Estate Z hybrid get their own wheel designs, both in a darkened finish.
Both variants of the Crown Estate get Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), which offers three driver-selectable modes – Normal, Sport and Rear Comfort. The Rear Comfort mode adds its own calibration for the Dynamic Rear Steering system to optimise comfort for the rear seat occupants.
Inside, the Crown Estate gets genuine leather upholstery in black or in tan, which is also applied to the multifunction steering wheel and transmission selector; also on is a 12.3-inch infotainment display. Meanwhile, driver assistance systems include collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection (day and night), motorcycle detection (daytime), with millimetre-wave radar and a monocular camera.
The 2025 Toyota Crown Estate in Japan can be had in a choice of five single-tone exterior colours, plus another five two-tone combinations with a black roof for the RS trim PHEV, including the PHEV-exclusive Grayish Blue paint finish; the Z trim hybrid gets five single-tone colours and four two-tone choices. Made in the Toyota Motor Corporation plant in Tsutsumi, Toyota aims to sell 1,500 units of the Crown Estate a month in Japan.
