2025 MG ZST becomes Australia’s cheapest SUV with run-out price cut

The MG ZST has become Australia’s cheapest SUV after prices were slashed to make it more than $1000 cheaper than any other SUV in new car showrooms.

The MG ZST Vibe is now the cheapest SUV in Australian new-car showrooms after its price was slashed to $22,888 drive-away, undercutting its closest rival by more than $1000.

Based on the outgoing MG ZS – the most popular small SUV in Australia and top-ten best seller in 2024 – the ZST’s drive-away price beats its previous best of $23,990 drive-away offer.

The new drive-away deal is also a significant $3602 less than the MG ZST Vibe’s official $26,490 drive-away figure, and is applicable to MY25 models.

It sees the entry-level, five-door, five-seat ZST Vibe replace the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro – currently offered at $23,990 drive-away – as the most affordable SUV in Australia, but only while stocks last as a new, second-generation ZS range has arrived in Australia.

It is still not the lowest SUV price offered, however, with brand-new examples of the previous MG ZS Excite SUVs – now sold out – retailing at $20,990 drive-away in a November 2024 promotion.

The new, second-generation ZS range was introduced in Australia in late 2024 with hybrid models arriving first – priced from $33,990 drive-away – with non-hybrid (petrol) MY25 versions now offered from $26,990 drive-away.

The ZST Vibe – which was the second of four trim levels – appears to be one of two ZST variants left in showrooms as the new-generation ZS takes over, with the higher spec Essence listed on MG’s public website from $29,990 drive-away.

The now-bargain ZST’s standard equipment list includes 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, and a 360-degree camera.

Power comes from an 84kW/150Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and CVT automatic transmission with front-wheel drive, with a combined fuel efficiency of 6.9L/100km.

Stepping up to the Essence nets buyers a more potent 115kW/230Nm 1.3-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine.

Like all MG vehicles sold in Australia since August 2024, the ZST Vibe is covered by a 10-year/250,000km warranty.

The new ZS faces greater competition from not only Chery but also GWM, which sells its Haval Jolion small SUV for a similar price to the ZS and Tiggo 4 Pro.

Despite the lower prices, Chery Australia Chief Operating Officer Lucas Harris told Drive a price war between brands is not good for anyone long-term, including customers.

The cheapest car of any type in Australia – baring special promotions – is the Kia Picanto city car with manual transmission, officially priced at $18,290 before on-road costs.
