  • Priced from $199,900 before on-road costs

The 2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sedan has launched in Australia, almost 12 months to the day after its global debut.

Priced from $199,900 before on-road costs, the arrival of the Mercedes-AMG E53 4Matic+ PHEV sees the local E-Class sedan line-up expand to two variants – following the E300’s launch in mid-2024 – with the high-performance, V8-powered E63 S rumoured to debut globally by 2026.

It costs $26,031 more than the outgoing E53 4Matic+ sedan last offered in 2023 – but adds plug-in hybrid technology bringing an additional 130kW and 230Nm for an E63-matching 450kW from its turbocharged inline-six engine, along with more standard equipment.

The 3.0-litre inline-six has been revised over the previous model to deliver 330kW/560Nm – up 10kW/40Nm – with a 120kW/480Nm transmission-integrated electric motor for a combined system output of 430kW and 750Nm.

Up to 450kW is available in short bursts using the Race Start launch-control feature, with a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 3.8 seconds – a 0.7s improvement.

Added features over the Mercedes-Benz E300 – which costs $131,500 in Australia – include 20-inch AMG lightweight alloy wheels, an AMG exterior design with wider front fenders, larger brakes, AMG Ride Control steel-spring suspension, adaptive dampers, and rear-axle steering.

The 2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 4Matic+ PHEV is on sale now.
