 2025 Mazda BT-50 Gains A New 2.2-Liter Turbodiesel With 161 HP

  • The updated Mazda BT-50 is available to order in Thailand, where it is being produced.
  • The facelift brought styling and tech upgrades, alongside a new powertrain option.
  • The 2.2-liter turbodiesel produces 161 hp and is mated to a new eight-speed automatic.

The 2025 Mazda BT-50 made its public debut at the Motor Expo in Thailand, together with the announcement of its detailed specs. The facelifted midsize pickup inherits a new diesel engine and gearbox combination from the Isuzu D-Max twin, bringing more power and torque to the entry-level trims.

The new powertrain is a turbocharged 2.2-liter MaxForce four-cylinder diesel, generating 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. This represents an increase of 13 hp (10 kW) and 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) compared to the 1.9-liter turbodiesel it replaces.

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual, or a new eight-speed automatic gearbox. The latter is said to improve fuel efficiency, while being smoother compared to the old six-speed automatic.

The other powertrain option is a carry-over 3.0-liter turbodiesel, generating 187 hp (140 kW / 190 PS) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque. This one is available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, sending power to the rear or to all four wheels. The 4WD version features a rear differential lock and an off-road driving mode.

Other than the new diesel, the highlight of the updated BT-50 its its redesigned face, bearing the largest Mazda logo ever to be fitted on a production model. The truck also features new LED headlights, bringing it closer to the automaker’s passenger lineup.

The BT-50 is available in five colors, including three new shades (Red Earth Metallic, Geode White Pearl, and Sailing Blue Metallic). It also rides on new alloy wheels, measuring 17 or 18 inches in diameter.

Inside, the 7-inch digital instrument cluster is combined with an 8-inch or 9-inch infotainment display depending on the trim. Equipment has been improved with more ADAS, including a Rear Cross Traffic Brake system.

The pickup is already available to order in Thailand, where it is also manufactured. Pricing starts from ฿762,000 ($22,100) for the entry-level Free Style cab with the 2.2-liter engine and RWD, and tops out at ฿1,352,000 ($39,200) for the flagship double cab with the 3.0-liter turbodiesel and 4WD.
