Ford brings more tech and versatility to its redesigned full-size SUV.

Among the many vehicles at Ford’s 2025 Chicago Auto Show display was its revamped flagship SUV. The 2025 Expedition sees revised exterior styling, improved tech, and a new off-road-themed Tremor variant.
Expedition has been a staple of the domestic automaker’s lineup for more than 25 years. The 2025 edition marks its fifth design generation. Styling wise, the new version doesn’t deviate much from its immediate predecessor. It’s a bit boxier with a more vertical grille and prominent cutouts on the lower “jawline” to accommodate fog lights. Standard and extended-wheelbase Expedition MAX body styles return.
Tremor
The biggest exterior design innovation can be found in the back with its new “Split Gate.” This feature is exactly what it sounds like: The rear liftgate is broken into a roughly 60/40 clamshell configuration. While the two sections can’t be opened and closed independently, the lower portion extends outward to provide a flat surface that supports up to 500 pounds for seating or easier loading of bulky cargo. The new Tremor variant has chunky off-road tires, extra ground clearance, and an electronic locking rear differential for buyers who want to venture beyond the pavement.
Interior
Inside is where you’ll find the most changes to the 2025 Expedition. The dashboard is completely new with a 24-inch panoramic instrument panel placed atop it rather than in front of the steering wheel. A separate infotainment screen provides access to Google built-in services plus wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support. An available factory-installed mount allows rear-seat passengers to clip their tablets to the front headrests. The new “Flex Powered Console” provides hidden storage for bags or purses.
Engines
Expedition also benefits from a simpler model lineup for 2025. Four grades are available instead of six, ascending through Active, King Ranch, Platinum, and Tremor. All use the brand’s 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine. All but the Tremor have 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. Optional on the Platinum and Standard on the Tremor is a higher-output version with 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. Power gets to the rear or all four wheels via Ford’s excellent 10-speed automatic transmission. Maximum towing capacity ranges from 7,000-9,600 pounds.
Pricing was not available in time for this report, but initial deliveries of the 2025 Ford Expedition are expected to get underway this spring.
CG Says
General Motors’ Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, along with the GMC Yukon, have dominated when it comes to full-size SUV market share. We’re glad Ford has invested the resources to bring its entry up to date because competition always benefits the consumer. We’re eager to put the redesigned Expedition through its paces.
