The seventh-generation Daihatsu Move has been unveiled in Japan, where it will be sold in four trim levels with pricing ranging from 1,358,500 to 2,024,000 yen (about RM40k to RM60k). Depending on the selected trim level, the Move will either come with a naturally-aspirated or turbocharged engine.
Both engines have displacement of 658 cc, with the NA unit serving up 52 PS (51 hp or 38 kW) at 6,900 rpm and 60 Nm of torque at 3,600 rpm. Meanwhile, the turbo engine makes 64 PS (63 hp or 47 kW) at 6,400 rpm and 100 Nm at 3,600 rpm. A CVT is the only transmission offered, although buyers can choose whether they want front- or all-wheel drive.
The maximum power output of the Move is in line with Japan’s kei car regulations, and so are the vehicle’s dimensions. The Move is small, measuring in at 3,395 mm long, 1,300 mm wide, 1,655 mm tall and with a wheelbase spanning 2,460 mm.
The latest Move is built on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) and features a more dynamic look compared to its predecessor. The X-shaped bumper is joined sleek headlamps that are connected to the upper grille, while the vertical taillights meet with the beltline that swings upwards near the large rear window.
In addition to the standard appearance, the Move can also be optioned with one of two style packages called Dandy Sports and Noble Chic (directly translated from Japanese). The former adds on plenty of dark accents for a sporty look, while the latter gets copper-coloured trim for a touch of elegance.
It’s also worth noting that this generation of Move is the first to come with sliding rear doors, which makes ingress and egress a lot more convenient in tight parking spaces. Once inside, you’ll notice the dashboard design isn’t too dissimilar to the outgoing model, as the layout looks rather familiar.
However, there are some notable changes such as the new digital panel for the air-conditioning system. The storage cubby below the central air vents has also been made larger to accommodate a wireless phone charger, while the storage area above the glove box that previously had a latched lid is now exposed.
Other revisions include a new steering wheel design and there are now smaller stowage areas near the corner air vents. Daihatsu offers infotainment touchscreens in nine- and 10-inch sizes, with a wide range of other accessories also available. The automaker also makes available a comprehensive ADAS suite with up to 17 functions, most of which come standard, such as autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control.
