Well, that didn’t take long – BYD has launched the 2025 model year Atto 3 in Malaysia, where it is now dubbed the Atto 3 Ultra. The new moniker doesn’t confer the car any significant upgrades over last year’s car, but it has brought a scarcely-believable price drop.
That’s right – clearly in response to the Proton eMas 7, BYD has slashed the price of the Extended Range model further by some RM26,000 to match the Malaysian EV. The car is now priced at RM123,800, making it a staggering RM44,000 cheaper than when it was launched here in 2023 (it was already given a RM18,000 price drop last year). It’s also cheaper than the supposedly entry-level Dolphin Premium Extended Range (RM124,900), so can we expect a price cut for that car too?
It should be noted that BYD’s nett pricing excludes on-the-road costs such as registration; add those costs back and the figure rises to RM124,500. However, it does include a six-year/150,000 km warranty and an eight-year/150,000 km warranty for the drive unit (160,000 km for the battery).
Better still, BYD is offering the first 1,000 buyers an additional RM5,000 rebate, bringing the price down to RM118,800. They also gain an incredible eight-year free service package worth RM4,888, bringing total savings up to RM9,888. Also included is a free AC wallbox charger worth RM3,699, a vehicle-to-load (V2L) adapter worth RM988 and a Type 2 charging cable worth RM1,796.
That money still buys you a single front motor producing 204 PS (150 kW) and 310 Nm of torque, getting the Atto 3 Ultra from zero to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. You also still get a 60.48 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate battery that delivers a WLTP-rated range of 420 km. The car supports 88 kW of DC fast charging, topping up the battery from 10 to 80% charge in 40 minutes. As for AC charging, maximum input remains the same as before at 7 kW, so a full charge takes 9 hours and 42 minutes.
Beyond the jaw-dropping new price, there’s not much in terms of changes for 2025. Building on last year’s model, the car gets a new design for the range-topping 18-inch alloy wheels, which are less intricate (and to our eyes, less handsome) than the original rollers. The colour palette has been stripped back this year, with Ski White, Harbour Grey and Cosmos Black being your only options now; Surf Blue has been removed.
Inside, the Atto 3 is now fully black, ditching the extroverted blue-and-white colour scheme of the launch model. Rather perplexingly, the piping has been switched from red to a very loud lime green, although the “guitar strings” on the door pockets are thankfully now black. You also now get ventilated front seats, a glaring omission on the current model.
The rest of the standard kit remains identical and includes adaptive LED headlights, roof rails, keyless entry with an NFC key card, push-button start, single-zone automatic air con, six-way driver’s and four-way passenger side power-adjustable front seats, faux leather upholstery, a panoramic glass sunroof, heated side-view mirrors, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Qi wireless charger and a 360-degree camera system.
Safety-wise, the Atto 3 comes with seven airbags (including a front centre airbag) and stability control, along with a full range of driver assistance systems. These include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, rear collision warning and a door opening warning.
