HI Everyone
I realize this thread is older but if someone out there is having the same problem with their cooling fan hopefully I can have some input.
I have 2010 Volvo xc 60 3.0 ltr turbo, my cooling fan (larger one) would not shut off even after the car was off, so I had to disconnect the battery so it wouldn’t go flat. Reading up on loads of comments on the web tube etc 90% of people said it was the cooling fan assembly / module. Volvo in Vancouver quoted me $805. + labour & said id could only buy the assembly they don’t sell the module separate for my model “damn” thats expensive so id be looking at about $1200 when all done. I sourced out for modules only online & yes there are ones on amazon for $30-60 what a deal but as they say you get what you pay for & coming from overseas if its crap you’ve wasted time & energy + $. I found a company in Toronto called Xemodex who is a reputable well known company that do all sorts of modules so I emailed them & they had OEM one for my car cost, inc del $232. had it in 2 days. I also bought a slim profile mini ratchet from amazon made by Klein tools for $20, you will need this if you attempt to replace the module yourself as room is very limited. Not being a mechanic myself but believe in having a go at most things I gave it a shot. All in it took me 20 min a few swear words & a high five to myself for saving a whack of $$$. have some confidence & do it yourself I found you’ll need a good source of light ( my iPhone wasn’t enough when I only had 1 hand) First pull off the 2 bottom plugs (theres a small pressure point to push in to release the clip on each plug) remember which plug goes where if your looking down at the module the bottom plug on the left goes to the small fan on the right goes to the large fan, then unplug the Karger cord at top & move outa the way. you’ll see a small Philips head screw that holds the model in place its at the top right this is why you’ll need the mini ratchet #2 head its magnetized so you wont loose the screw on way out. once screw is out pull the module up & replace with the new one you’ll see it slips in to the brackets on the bottom I put it in place first then connected the bottom plugs (make sure their in tight then I replaced the screw don’t forget to change the direction clip on ratchet for tightning now then I replaced the top cord made sure everything was nice N tight connected my battery back on & Walla no fan came on perfect sign. started the car up let it run for a bit turned on fan in car re checked all fans
under the hood where working then turned off the inside ac & fans & checked fan under hood were off then everything was fine. hopefully this is the last one ill have to do for this car but a little self maintenance goes a long way.
Hope this helps someone down the road.
thx Aussie Bill
