2000 v70R tech questions | SwedeSpeed

This is the first forum I have ever joined and the first thread I have ever written. I’m usually a lurker, but lurking is a hit or miss, usually miss way of finding technical information. I finally picked up an R. I have been looking for one for a while, and I got it for cheap. It had the common problems: plugged PCV system, cam seals pushed out, split loom crumbling, vacuum lines disintegrating, and to top it off, a critter made a home in the hood fiberglass blanket, so even just touching the engine would leave you itching for days. Knowing very little about the history of the car, I had a simple plan. Tear the engine down, shim the block, install a new head gasket, rebuild the head, replace anything that can rot or leak, replace or eliminate the PCV system, and then enjoy the car. The engine has a whole bunch of firsts, like bucket lifters, an electronic throttle body mounted under the intake manifold,VVT, more vacuum lines than I care to mention, and a huge turbocharger that, according to Volvo, gives me 261 HP, that part I like. I’m going to post some photos of my cylinder head, but there are some anomalies that have me baffled. Hopefully, someone out there can shed some light on my questions. No.1 how do the cam lobes/lifters get lubricated? They don’t look like they are getting much oil. The cam journals are getting oil because they are clean and shiny. You see the oil gallery, that squiggly brown line, but those 1/8th inch holes that would have kept the hydraulic lifters pumped up are dummy gallerys they are not drilled through to the buckets! Did Volvo expect the cam lobes to get lubed by squish out from the journals? Or did they forget to drill out the feed holes? See photo #2

Another thing Volvo left out the cam seal on the intake cam closest to #5 on the right. They installed a plug but no seal. Thats strange? #3 was this cylinder head going to be a hydraulic lifter head or did they forget to drill the gallery hole, I want to drill the holes through. I talked to IPD , They told me they thought Volvo was experimenting. I had them check to see if a hydraulic lifter set up used a higher volume oil pump, They said the pump on the R is used on many other Volvo vehicles. I wouldn’t want to drop the oil pressure by supplying oil directly to the cam lobes but one way or another i got to get oil to that area. Has anyone seen this before? Got any ideas? I’m thinking a small hole, maybe .063 or smaller What say U?
