Recently I’ve completed an oil consumption fix for my cousins 2015 V60 T5 with 2.0 Drive-E engine (B4204T11). The fix is also known as TJ 31216.5.0. The car has 116k miles and has been suffering from excessive oil consumption for a quite some time. It’s been widely discussed that Volvo provides complimentary oil consumption checks and expands warranty till 100k miles, but our car clocked a bit more than that, so I’ve decided to replace pistons and rings by myself. Apparently there is not a lot of info available on how to repair VEA engines, so I would like to share a bit of my experience with those who want to tackle the job by themselves or who are asking why is it costs $5-6k at independent shops. I’m very familiar with white block Volvo engines and performed at least 15-20 head gasket/bent valves/engine rebuilds on P80, P1 and P2 platforms. This was my first experience with deep diving into VEA engine.
Here I would like to share the parts list that needed to do the ring job and do everything “while in there”. Apparently, many part numbers are available from Volvo only, no good aftermarket options are available as of now (end of 2023), at least in US. In my list I specified part numbers and brands that I personally trust as good aftermarket options. Also specified are prices for parts that could be used as a guide for a part cost. Parts were purchased online at one of the official Volvo retailers, at FCP, and RMeuropean. FCP sells a piston replacement kit, but it is missing quite a few parts that are needed to complete the job and some parts that are not needed. VIDA insctuctions for the job state that exhaust manifold with catalytic converter needs to be removed from the car, as well as turbo lines and some other bits, but in reality exhaust manifold can stay attached, no issues with cylinder head clearance at all.
As a disclaimer I must say that this parts list is a guide only, some part numbers may be superseded/obsolete. This is a list for T5 models only, T6 engines will need extra parts due to installed supercharger. Do not rely on it and check correct information before ordering parts.
