1999 V70 2.5 TDI – RHD “Englishman” | SwedeSpeed

Hello everyone. I’m a part of this forum for more than 10 years now. I have received some great advice from you. Now I want to give something back.

I have this car since 2016 and it’s nothing special in my opinion, so I always thought it was not worth presenting it on the forum. I never thought I will keep this car for so many years. And now as I think about it, it might deserve a forum thread. Unfortunately it’s not an R, but it’s “special” in it’s own way:

  • It has 2.5 TDI VW/Audi 5 cylinder diesel engine with 140 HP – not sure if there is any other V70 TDI on this forum?
  • It’s RHD which is also unusual in our country, because we normally drive LHD cars, but I have been daily driving this RHD V70 for years now and I love it! I call him Englishman, because it’s imported from UK and it’s RHD.
  • I have bought it with 330k miles and it now has 356k miles. It has High mileage Volvo certificate from Volvo club UK. Unfortunately I don’t drive a lot, so miles are rising really slowly.

As I can see there is not a lot of knowledge on Volvo forums, when it comes to 2.5 TDI engines. There are some german forum threads because the same engines were in VW Transporter T4 and Audi A6, but not everything is the same on the Volvo engine and I don’t understand German anyways. This forum is a great knowledge base for T5 and R engines, which I’m really happy about, as I also own 2003 V70R M66. But I was not able to find similar information for 2.5 TDI so I had to do a lot of investigating on my own and I would like to share this information here if somebody will find this useful or interesting.

I bought this car for 500 EUR back in 2016. It was really beaten up. It still kinda is. I have already spent 5x more than it’s value on parts and I will probably spend another 5x on parts in the near future and it will be still worth 500 EUR at the end. But I like working on it. I might write a handbook “How to invest $5,000 into $500 car that is still worth $500”. Let me know if you would be interested in that 😅

I come from Slovenia, Europe. The car was purchased new in England. First owner had it for 3 years from 1999 to 2002. Then the second owner had it from 2002 to 2016. He has moved from England to Slovenia I think somewhere around 2005 and he brought the car with him. I bought it of that 2nd owner in 2016. I have all the invoices from 1999 until 2016. I even have a speeding ticket from UK 😃. For the first 10 years it was serviced at official Volvo dealer in UK, then here in Slovenia. RHD to LHD headlights conversion was done by official Volvo dealer in Slovenia. As I can see this car has received a lot of oil changes, and timing belt changes, but not much more than that. It has 356k miles and still has a first turbo, first clutch and first injectors after 24 years of serving. At least I can’t find any invoices for that.

Enough talking. Here are the pictures. The car is nothing special and beaten up. Let’s start in 2016 and I will slowly update the thread to the present date.

Here’s the car as I bought it.

Looks great with the Pegs. Yes it also has original Volvo towing hook.

Here it might look nice and clean, but it’s not if you come any closer 😆
I’ve put these stickers on for a promo in the first summer when I had the car and never took them off. Will probably remove them this year because I will swap the complete doors.🙃
