In the 1950s, Maserati was known as a race-car manufacturer that had dabbled in a handful of low-volume GTs. However, with the debut of a 3485cc DOHC straight-six in the 1955 350S, Maserati was ready to build a GT for the relative masses—thus, the 3500 GT that debuted in 1957. Touring was responsible for the 2+2 with lightweight superleggera construction, while Carrozzeria Vignale had the honors for the 3500 GT Spyder droptop that appeared in 1960. That was the same year four-wheel discs and limited-slip differential were made standard and, later that year, the fuel-injected 3500 GTi was introduced at the Salon de l’Automobile with a newly standard five-speed. It was this car that received several styling upgrades that included a lower roofline, longer nose, shallower grille, and more.
This Metallic Blue 1962 Maserati 3500 GTi features the 232-horsepower six fed by fuel injection and backed by a ZF five-speed manual. Originally sold in Italy, this Maserati was later exported to the U.S., then went to the UK in 2010 to begin an 11-year restoration. The gray leather interior was retrimmed, plus the engine was overhauled with a few updates that include a new electronic fuel injection system hiding within the original Lucas system. Other features include a limited-slip differential, 16-inch Turrino wire wheels with Borrani knock-offs, aluminum radiator with electric fan, and stainless-steel exhaust system, among others.
